256MB is getting freaking ridiculous

So, 256MB on the high end cards (9800/5900) isn't all that insane, well, 5600 with 256MB? Well, that seems a little unnecessary.

So, then we hit the freaking 9200 and 5200's with 256MB RAM. Hell, they're gonna have to run at low res and won't even fill probably 64MB, 256MB is insane!

What's the point of 256MB on the budget end of the market?!?

Definitley marketing...I can't believe somebody would actually fall for it and buy one though. 256mb on a 9200..lmao, absolutely ridiculous.

The XFX Geforce FX5600 I used for a few weeks had 256mb and it was even clocked slower than the 128mb version, good thing I didn't buy it. 🙂

<crystal ball> do0d, this one is teh fast0r3r, its got more MB! drop that Radeon dawg, it's only got 128MB. This SiS Eagle has 512MB!!!!!!! GET IT!!! </crystal ball>

Disturbing future it's turning out to be.

I know a few noobs that would think it increases perfomance to the double. So marketing is making effect as the noob people will buy them as they are begger numbers and know nothing about hardware. Marketing is a sh!t.

I know it's marketing but one annoying thing that has always bothered me is when they release a 64 and 128mb version of a card and they clock the 128mb slower...defeating the point, surely you pay extra for the card with more memory because you are trying to increase the speed of your games through additional texture memory.

Maybe to reduce costs. It also annoys me.

Yeah that is lame. Anyone remember the Voodoo 2 8MB versus 12MB debates? The core always becomes outdated and is just too slow by the time the extra memory capacity is really required to make a difference.

Any benefit to 256MB on a card such as the 9800 Pro? Perhaps not with current games, but with Doom 3 or HL2??

The same controversy arose when they went from 32 t0 64 and from 64 to 128.

The antis used the same arguements - "insane, never be needed".

Already, tests are showing that at high res - 1600x1200 - with AA and AF cranked, 256 gives a few more fps than 128.

That said, I'll wait a year or two before feeling I "need" 256.

Try 256MB with a 9200 and see if you can use 1600x1200 with AA and AF even on 😛
