256MB GeForce FX5700 >OR< 128MB ATI Radeon 9600XT

I assume all these repeated quotes (without response) mean you All Agree the 128mb Radeon 9600XT is much better than the Geforce even though it's 128mb vs 256mb for the GeForce?

That FX5700 cannot utilize the full 256MB...so you could pack on a GB of RAM on that card & the 9600XT would still be better 🙂
256MB on any card below 9800XT or 5900U = marketing to suck people like you in 😉

Funny you should bring this up, but on www.futurepowerpc.com they show a 128mb Chaintech SA5700128 this retails for $89. They also have a 256 MB version SA5700256 For $135. As far as benching goes between the 9600xt and the 5700. It would seem that the XT would have an advantage because its core clock speed is 500mhz vs 425mhz. And the memory bus speed is 680mhz vs 500mhz. but as you know speed isn't everything.

Thanks.. It's true .. about my depth of knowledge on cards.

Here are the "affordable Choices" and the relative Prices I will pay for upgrades..

Remember... I am a Heavy User .. but NOT a Gamer

256MB Nvidia GeForce FX5700 8X AGP DDR DVI/TVout $129
128MB ATI Radeon 9600XT DVI/TV AGP $149
128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro DVI/TV AGP $219
128MB ATI All in Wonder Radeon 9600 XT DDR DVI/TV AGP $209

(Eliminating all the very high and really low choices)

A heavy user? Of what hardware? Your net connection? But seriously, what do u do with your computer? If you are not a gamer, dont get any of those cards unless u atleast game some. For a gamer, id reccomend the 9800p listed there for the best bang for ur buck out of those 4 choices. Next on the list would be a 9600xt. If you arent a gamer at ALL, get a cheap 9200se.

If you don't game at all, just get a cheap 64MB card (or maybe 9200SE), unless you do alot of rendering.

This is Part of a really Well Priced systen that Inbcudes the 5700 Card..

Athlon 3500 socket 939
Asus A8v Deluxe/Via K8t800Ptro Chipset
160GB WD SATA
1GB Corsair select
GeForce 5700FX 256mb
Dual Layer 12x DVD+/RW DVDRW/CDRW
(With Floppy, Cheap Speakers, Keyboard, and ether Network Card)
Raidmax Case 420W Power

all for $999...

(OS extra)

It's just a Relative price at $129 for the 5700.. as a basis to Upgrade..
As part of the Pre-Config systemI'm sure he's putting in at Less.

Hey I have a 9200se in one of my rigs. It doesn't fair too bad, albeit I am in the market to replace it, but hey you can pick one up with 128mb for the mid $40 range. If you don't game don't go one of those other cards unless like n7 stated you do a lot of rendering.

Might as well get a used TNT2... if you play any games at all, Dangerous, go for the 9600XT, it's worth the twenty bucks, since it can run with the much higher-clocked 5700 Ultra, and win in AA/AF situations.

This is your best bang/buck choice. If you can't buy used or insist on buying only at the prices listed, the 9600XT is worth the extra $20 over the 5700, and the 9800P is worth the further $70 over the 9600XT. Best yet, wait a few weeks for the ~$200 GeForce 6600GT 128MB to hit the AGP scene (only the PCIe is available, ATM). It's faster than a 9800P for the same money.

You can verify this by checking some benchmarks. A 9800P will walk away from a 9600XT at higher resolutions and especially with AA+AF. (And note that the 5700 in that comparison is an Ultra [475/450MHz], far faster than a plain 5700 [425/275MHz], and not among your choices.)

But you say you're a heavy user, not a gamer? If you won't game, just get the $69 Jetway 9600LE at NewEgg. It's the cheapest semi-decent gaming card for the money (in case you decide to dabble in some reflex-building activities), and it's also silent (no fan) and draws very little power (<<10W idle!).

Also, to reiterate, 128MB of fast RAM is always preferable to 256MB of much slower RAM for gaming. The 256MB may be useful in specific cases like manipulating huge pictures, but otherwise it's basically a waste (of RAM and money) on slower cards (like anything below a 6800/X800P). For office work, though, even 8MB should suffice, as I think you basically only need enough RAM to hold the screen image ([1600 * 1200pixels] * [32bpp] = only ~7.32MB required for a 32-bit, 1600x1200 desktop).

Other than the video card, such a powerful system for a non-gamer? Wow :Q
