If you didn't get the PNY 256MB DDR SDRAM from Best Buy or OD, there are two more good deals coming this Sunday:

CompUSA: PNY 256MB DDR PC2100 SDRAM (usually Samsung, Infineon, or Elixir chips)
$49.99
- $20 MIR
-----------------
= $29.99 AR

Best Buy: Kingston ValueRAM 256MB DDR PC2100 SDRAM (possibly Samsung, Infineon or Nanya chips)
$79.99
- $30 IR
- $15 MIR
-----------------------
= $34.99 AR

Looks like the much publicized shortage of DDR RAM is just a facade for the memory suppliers to get rid of their inventory... I don't think there's any real shortage here.

Thanks to Fiend for posting the Sunday flyers which is where I found out about these deals.

NOBODY BETTER GO TO THE COMPUSA AT THE TRI-COUNTY MALL IN OHIO!!!

Anyways, when I went whenthey had the 128MB deal, the first two boxes I were handed were samsung on samsung. I bought them but ended up returning them because I want 256mb sticks...

I bought 1x from best buy.

I figure the 256mb sticks would be similar. Now all I need is to find a ride...

You guys have to understand that most chains, ie Frys, BB, CompUSA, etc...

A: May have a direct relationship with the mfr.
B: May be buying gray market
C: May have contract pricing
D: Might be sitting on 10000 sticks they took delivery at in june, at $30

The retail market and the wholesale market are 2 very different things. Retail prices may not accurately reflect what the market price is. For the same reason vegetable prices can go up bigtime, but since X supermarket has a relationship with the farmers the price dosent move.

Andy is right.

The retail stores ala CompUSSR, BB, Staples, etc. are normally a bit behind when it comes to memory price fluctuations (both up and down). Weird but true.

Thanks for the heads-up.
Since people are gonna ask "which chips are best", let me share what I have learned.

Infineon - commonly the HYB25D256800AT-7 which is 'manufactured' to be 143/2.5 or 133/2 (see link)
Nanya - two common chips NT256D64S8HA0G-7K & -75B
7K = 143/2.5 or 133/2
75B = 133/2.5 or 100/2
Samsung - has more variety, but often is K4H560838C-TCA0 or B0
A0 = 100/2
B0 = 133/2.5
A2 = 133/2
B3 = 166/2.5

So I will be looking for a Samsung B3, then Infineon -7, Nanya -7K, A2, B0, A0 (dreaming of an A3 or Infineon -6)

I bought 2x256MB PC2100 DDR last week when BB B&M had it for $29.99 after rebate.

One is Elixir and the other is Samsung, if I have no intentions of overclocking are these ok or should I return them and specifically look for Samsung/Infineon?

RossMAN -

Only those who care about the various timing ratings, CL, and .5 nano-second differences (performance enthusiasts) should care about which chips they get. I won't go out of my way to find them or hassle a busy associate to dig through the inventory. I do try to be consistent about brand & chips on the same MB though (just anal like that).

The 'lower quality' chips (Elixir) are often blamed for 'stability problems'. But I think all the memory will perform fine as PC2100.

Mostly I posted the info to make myself look smart and help fellow ATers, like yourself, who have saved me so much $$.

FYI - occasionally I do read in AT reviews that board X doesn't like memory Y.

Rossman, from what I've read, Elixir runs fine at PC2100. So no need to return it if you're not overclocking.

All the discussion about Samsung, Infineon and Elixir chips is for people who want to use the PNY PC2100 stick as PC2700 memory in the newer DDR333 motherboards, but don't want to pay for real PC2700 memory. (Real Samsung on Samsung PC2700 256MB SDRAM costs somewhere around $70 at newegg, whereas the PNY 256MB PC2100 SDRAM was only $25-$35 AR at BB and OD, i.e. (less than) half the cost.)

But, are you sure you're never gonna want to overclock it in the future??? ;)

Thank you for the post. I am going to go check it out this weekend. I was wondering how to identify what kind of ram you are getting i.e. samsung, spectek. ect. I dont think i have ever examined a PNY box. If it clearly says the brand please forgive my ignorance.
Thank You

The back of the package is clear, so you can see the chips. I got one from the BB deal and one from OD, both Infineon -7ns:)

Machiavelli - As goog40 said the backing of the RAM package is clear plastic, the print is kind of small but if you put the package up to your eyes close enough you'll see what kind of chips you're getting.

Why wait until Sunday.

The $14.95 deal at OD is the best one ever!!

(PM to CC = $54.95 - $25 rebate - $15 B&M coupon = $14.95)

Is that the Kingston ValueRAM at BB?

Someone mentioned that Nanya that's made in Taiwan is not bad. The bad ones are those made in Singapore.
