250gb Maxtor w/USB2 external enclosure $149.99 -no rebates

Bah, I just noticed that the plain drive ($119) now has free shipping. I just ordered it Monday and paid $10 for ground 🙁. With this deal here, I could get the USB enclosure and the drive for just $35 more than what I paid... Thanks for posting.

Is a fan really that important? I read some users reviews from newegg on various enclosures and lots of them don't have fans. A few of the Speeze ones don't even have any noticeable ventilation, but all users say they don't get very hot (warm at most).

why is a fan important? If it had problems overheating I'm sure they would have added a fan. If it can operate cool enough without a fan you just relieved yourself of some extra noise. I'd prefer fanless. My only beef is no firewire.

It all depends on how you use the drive.

If you put it on the system, copy a gig to it or a gig off of it, and then let it sit for a while (an hour, etc.) before you use it again, then you'll not have problems. If you put it on the system and you're using it on a constant basis (recording video, playing music, etc.) then it could get warm enough to have issues.

Also, for those putting their own drives in enclosures, if you want to go fanless, consider 5400 RPM drives. A bit quieter, but a lot cooler typically.
