There are several threads that already answer your question. But in general, the biggest gain from the 2600k over the 2500k is when doing video encoding. You aren't going to see a huge difference when gaming between the two. For the price, unless you're a huge video encoder, go with the 2500k.

people like me as the member before said, who use lots of video stuff...

i don't know what the 2500k's performance difference is when it comes to DAW usage but i can personally say its awesome. real awesome.

but for gaming, 2600 is basically useless... however the 2600 is needed if you encode like i do.

Bigger e-penis, is the best benefit of 2600K for most folks here.

Bigadv in F@H is the reason I went with the 2600k. If you are a gamer, then there is really no need to spend the money as of right now since nothing uses more than 2 to 4 cores.

The people who would get the most out of the Intel® Core™ I7 2600K are those who use software that is multi-threaded to take advantage of more than 3 threads. Some rare games, video encoding, some audio software are areas where you might see a performance increase with Hyper-Threading over a processor without. Also it is important to understand that Hyper-Threading can be turned off in the Bios.

I'd go with the 2600k over the 2500k for epeen and future proofing if I was interested in buying one. I'm going on 2+ years on the X-58 platform. Hopefully whenever I go to ivy bridge I'll get 2+ out of that.

i know a kid that plays wow and just bought a 400$ motherboard, 1200w powersupply, and a 2600k with just a weak 200$ videocard. . .Maybe this tells you the type of not so informed people who buy the 2600k simply because it is more expensive so there is a perception that it is substantially better when i have no doubt 95% of users will have same benefit with the 2500k. You wouldn't be posting this thread if you needed a 2600k.

massive fail.

But if you have the money, why not buy a 2600k over 2500k? It's only $100 more for future proofing :D...

This.

FWIW I disable HT in the bios most of the time for general use. I enable it to do any encoding, or run multiple VMs. I suppose I could probably get into a bit of FaH... :whiste:

I got it mostly for use with x264 for 1080p encoding. The speed boost over my Q9550 was incredible. My fps on encodes have more than doubled.

Why you go and change to HT , like that, it should be On , never disable it on any reason. You get your max OC and cooling.

I get better OC and cooling with it on? Is that why it (automatically) uses .2v less on vcore with HT disabled?

Do you really think that making it work harder makes it run cooler? Or faster? o_O

That would actually be an ideal rig to play Starcraft 2 on, believe it or not. :D
