2500K Upgrade

XMan

My main PC is going on four years old and the motherboard and CPU are pretty much the last pieces standing. I'm pretty satisfied with the rest of my system, would I see any worthwhile benefit in swapping out my CPU for a 3770K or would I be better served moving to a newer platform? I do a lot of video assembly and editing from HD camcorder videos, not so much in the way of gaming, anymore. (Still haven't beaten Half Life 2!)

Yes, even an i7 2600k would improve render times when editing video. You don't really need a newer platform..

The comparison benchmarks also show a pretty good jump, but that's at stock. What's the 3770K usually top out at?

With 4 cores and 8 threads, you should notice a nice improvement if you are using software that utilizes it.

2500K/2600K are slightly slower per clock but clock slightly higher than Ivy Bridge. I'd say 4.5-4.8ghz with reasonable voltage and cooling is the norm for Sandy Bridge, while Ivy Bridge is going to be more like 4.4-4.6ghz.
