2500K prices- buy now or wait?

Will the prices come down much in the next two or three months?
I can get one now for $195 at MicroCenter but don't want to wait for the price just to go down $10 or $15.

Thanks

If Intel wants to clear its inventory before releasing IB I could say it is a possibility but I wouldn't count on that. Even if there were to be a price drop, it is not much that it is worth the 2-3 month wait.

I can tell you that it will drop - question is how much.

I know when Lynn arrived, Microcenter was basically clearing out Blooms, was able to get a i7 930 for an incredible $189!

Yes, I have the mobo already and ram.
Ex wants to go to a movie, I think I'll go so afterwards she can drive me to the MicroCenter.

I doubt the prices are going to drop all that much between now and april. Plus you get to use it for the next 3 months so you might as well grab one now. If you always are waiting for the next best thing, you won't ever have anything in the present 🙂

Yea, leaving for the MicroCenter in 15mins with the ex then the movie. Don't know why she switched the order of things cause I'm going to be sitting in the movie wondering what I can get out of the new chip in oc's 🙂

If it was me I'd be wondering WTF am I doing at the movies with the X ..... whom I lovingly refer to as the Kraken

Enjoy your new toys! (cause no self respecting geek walks out of microcenter empty handed)

First of all I dont have any knowledge of future price drops at all. So I would doubt that there will be any price drops for the Intel® Core™ i5-2500K during Q1 at all. The Intel Core i5-2500K is by far our best selling processor in the enthusiast space. Generally a price drop is designed to help sell a processor that we want to move more and at this time we have hard problems over the holadays keeping the Intel Core i5-2500K in stock.

Not sure if you can share this info or not but do you have any info on the 2550k?

still $180... maybe OP was considering tax(~8%) vs newegg's tax free $225

If he lives in CA, they're both taxed.

Santa Clara Microcenter is pretty much next door to a megaplex movie theater, so that's where I assumed he was given he was talking about going to the movies right before / after.

The more important question here is YTF are you going to a lousy movie with the Ex when you could be tinkering with a spanking new CPU? Cut out the crappy movie and you have already saved the money you would have by waiting a few more months for the CPU anyway. That's what we in the 'biz refer to as a "win-win."

Some "win-win" with the EX afterwards 😀

Yeah, I don't think they will drop prices on SB CPU's much. I was looking to replace a Q6600 with a Q9550 or something like it thinking that when the i7's came out the price on the QXXXX's would drop. Guess what, for $199 that Q6600 is still going an will never be replaced. So I would not wait on 2500's to come down(at least not much more down) but the wait is if you what an IB CPU or not.

Typically Intel doesn't blow out CPU's, they replace them with whatever the next model is at the price of the previous model. They just sell out the previous model at existing or slightly lower prices.

Intel does NOT lower CPU prices when they're phased out. The most recent example are the lynnfield i7's which remained the same price until they were discontinued.

Buy it now. Its only 200$.

Intel Price's usually get their best when a product is most popular, then go up again or stay level once its not, so I'd definitely just buy unless there's something you know you want out of Ivy Bridge.

Intel's last few product cycles haven't shown a lot of discounts if any towards cycle's end. They usually just discount and replace immediately with the next part number. Which is why you never really saw the quad Q9550s or Q9650s at a discount, or the i7 920s, which were just switched out for the 930s, which gave way to the 950s, etc...

Moral is, buy now. Intel has set things up so there isn't much of an advantage to waiting for price drops any more.

This!

I got my chip, yea $193.94 is with tax in Chicago. The guy had to go into the back to get it and walk me to the counter and hand it to the cashier. Ex waited in the car and when I came back into the car I showed her the box and she looks at me and says "That cost $200?"

Today I will start putting things together. Shoveled snow today and got tired and wound up taking a nap.
