2500k overclock

I went from a Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard to a Asrock Z77 Extreme 4. I upgraded motherboards because the Gigabyte was giving cold boot loop errors and I could use the extra features of the Asrock. Anyway that aside I could do 4.4ghz 1.35v on the gigabyte but can't get past 4ghz even at 1.4v on the asrock. System locks up at windows logo.

Is this a problem with Z77 and maybe sandy bridge or maybe I have a setting off somewhere? The asrock sure has more settings then the gigabyte.

Possibly the Gigabyte boards other voltages were more aggressive on auto. What voltages have you played around with?

Well temps are within reason could it still be seating problem with the cooler? I haven't tried anything over 1.4v 4.2ghz/4.4ghz which crashes. Right now it runs find at 1.25v 4ghz. I tried 4.1ghz lastnight at 1.35 and got into windows but it crashed. I just refused to go past 4ghz for whatever reason.

Edit:must be a setting problem that was typically enable/disabled on the gigabyte because I enabled pll overvoltage and disabled c3/c6 and now it boots at 4.2 now. Gigabyte didn't have these options that I recalled. Priming at the moment.

yeah has to be pll overvoltage. Disabling it at 4.4ghz 1.35v system refused to boot. With it enabled I can now boot into windows at 4.4ghz 1.3v. Going to do some stressing now to check to see if its stable. Not sure what pll overvoltage does but from what I read it's usually only enabled to achieve higher then 4.5ghz overclocks. Guessing maybe my chip just sucks and needs it at lower then that overclocks? Any input on this?

Make sure LLC calibration is turned on and CPU power saving features are turned off in the bios. I don't use PLL overvoltage and have run 4.5 GHz at 1.3V for years.

This board is very strange I've found a boot pattern. If I clear CMOS it works perfect 4.5ghz/1.33v. If I restart the PC works perfect. But once I shutdown and boot up it locks up at windows logo. Only way to get it past windows logo is go into bios on next boot and enable pll overvoltage. But then I can restart and disable pll overvoltage and everything is fine again till next shutdown. I can even go into bios enable ppl overvoltage then save re-enter bios and disable it and save again. It doesn't even have to fully load into windows.

If any of this make sense?
