2500+ to 3200+ pretty much a sure thing?

I'm building a new computer, and I'm going to go with a 2500+ for now, and save up some money to go with a 939-Athlon 64 system this fall.

There seems to be a ton of success with the 2500+'s. Is the retail heatsink good enough, or should I look at something like the SLK-947?

Presuming the rest of the hardware is up to it, the chances are very good for getting a 2500+ to 3200+ speed on 1.85v or less. The cooler shipping with it is good enough for that speed as well according to some of the members who have bought retail 2500+'s recently. The SLK would be overkill for 2.2ghz unless you want a very quite and cool system or are very anal retentive about temps.

Define "anal retentive". Thermal threshold on Athlon XP CPUs is 85C, my 2.105GHz 2800+ runs about 63C after about nine hours of continuous operation using the AMD retail sink. Extrapolate from that what you will.
I'd greatly prefer an SLK-700/-800 over the AMD stock, but since the AMD sink is free and an SLK isn't, I guess it's good enough to tide you until you get the money for an SLK. Dapunisher is right though, you don't necessarily need an SLK to reach 2.2GHz, unless you like having your CPU pushing 65C under moderate load...
Oh, and one more thing: 2500+'s are known for good overclocking, but don't expect 10x220 right out of the box; not all CPUs are excellent overclockers, even in a family of CPU known for excellent overclocks.

it's my understanding the newer barton's are muliplier locked at 11x.. or are they? i didn't check.

rec'd a retail 2500+ a couple hours ago, installed it and runs at 11x200 right out of the box, stock voltage. couple issues under full load, so bumped voltage up by .5v, and everything running smooth and stable so far

while results may vary, overall i think a very high % will reach 3200+ clock speed, with a bit of variance reported on how much voltage was required (think i've heard some state as high as 1.8v).

i think you can reasonably expect to attain that overclock, and if not, very close.

Yes, all newer Bartons are factory multiplier locked past production week 39. Unless, you're like me and get an awesome week 32 2500+ that's locked!

The same heatsink comes with an XP2500 as with an XP3200. Even if you have to increase the voltage by a half point or so to reach that speed, you're not increasing the heat so much that you'd need better cooling. If you plan to try for 2.3 or higher, then I'd start thinking about a better heatsink and fan combo.

Not a sure thing! There are no "sure things" in overclocking, no matter what people say. My 1700+ never reached 2.2, my 2500+ never reached 2.2, and my 2.6C never reached 3.2. These were all "reasonable" overclocks for these chips and I had darn good cooling and ram for all of them. :disgust: Make sure before you order that you'd be happy with less than that.
