Sorry for just adding more heat to the fire by tossing in another question/issue here, but Ive been experiencing some barton troubles of my own...
I have a week 24 or so 2500+. I have Corsair XMS pc3200 512MB stick, which I run cas2 2-2-11. I usually run it always at 2.8v or 2.9v just for the sake of ensuring stability, for what it's worth...
My motherboard is a Chaintech 7NJS Nforce2 400.
Now, a while back I had a TbredA 1800+ which I ran on my first 7NJS at 217fsb x 8.5.
Eventually I got the 2500+, and it wouldnt go past 185FSB. So I cut the L12 bridge to make it default to a 266mhz part, which really did the trick, I was surprised I dont know how the hell that thing works... I changed NOTHING else so I know it was that cut I made. Then I was running this barton at approx. 207fsb, anything higher it just wouldnt take at all.
Somewhere down the road my 7NJS died, and I RMAed it back to Newegg for a replacement. The first motherboard I had was the early version of the Nforce2 chipset, like when they had the silver heatslugs in the center, and werent called '400'. The new one was a newer version of Nforce2, no heatslug, and it says 400 or whatever. Now this new board, combined with the new processor, the 2500+, is overclocking absolutely HORRIBLE.
Mind you I'm using the 2500+'s stock cooling, which really isnt all that bad, but I should at LEAST be able to get a higher FSB out of it, not just go for speed records, ya know...
So anyway, the FSB I am capable of overclocking to keeps dropping. Right now I am only able to set it to 197fsb, everything else will not take AT ALL. However, even at 197 the board inconsistently boots up. I get a C3 code on the 'Cbox' accessory they provide when it doesnt want to post, which is about 9/10 of the times I push the POWER button (mind you I dont turn it off a lot, only if it locks up or I need to reboot or something, which I like to avoid). I am able to take it up to like 208fsb IN WINDOWS, but higher than that it doesnt like.
So my older chip could take it 217 easy, my older board could do over 200, now my overclock is just disappointing and depressing the hell out of me.
Should I look into chipset voltage modification?
And Im kind of scared about looking into a BIOS update because I hate having to reinstall Windows after doing so. I HATE reinstalling Windows, PERIOD.

you shoulnt have to reinstal windows after a bios update, unless your oard has some problem or just sucks.

I'm another one of those "unlucky" people who had a Barton 2500+ that wouldn't overclock above 180Mhz FSB. I don't think that my memory or Motherboard were the problem, either (1 GB DD400 HyperX, Gigabyte 7N-400-L1 using nForce2).
You should perform the L12 mod I spoke of. People who get stuck in the range of 180-190 tend to have good luck when reverting the chip to a 266mhz part by default, then upping the FSB again. I dont know how it works, but it sure as hell did.
If you dont have any luck finding a link on how to do it when searching, post back and Ill provide a link for you (im not at my own machine right now).
Thanks for the info, MatthewF01. But, I already returned that processor that opted for the 3000+ with 400Mhz FSB. Guess I wasn't adventurous enough!
Interesting how setting it back to 266Mhz first would help, though. If you get the chance, I would be very interested in reading that post of yours. Could this be found with doing a search of "L12"? I couldn't locate it....

They explain how to do it, and why. Some other people have talked about it on this board, but it was a while back and I sometimes cant find crap using search...
How is the 3000+ handling? Have you overclocked THAT?
You surely still have a few mhz left in your RAM for higher FSB speed!

I have an AQZEA that I had been letting run at default until I swapped in a larger drive this weekend. With the drive basically safe and sound (since I had the spare), I set my el cheapo $71 AOpen AK79D board for 200 FSB and fired it up. Success at 2200 !! This was as easy an O/C as I have ever had. I'm a mild O/C'er and remain happy at 2200.
AMD has provided a real bargain with certain CPUs and I have no qualms about recommending them to my PC-naive friends. They only know the Intel name from the marketing push and wonder what this AMD thing is all about.

if you up the fsb on the Barton 2500 to 200/400 can you still use pc 2700 or is it better to use pc 3200? Is pny, kingston, etc, any good or do I need Corsair or Mushkin? 2700 or 3200? thanks...
DEFINITELY 3200, if not higher.
there is no price difference between 3200 and 2700.
you can always make 3200 run at 2700, if you need to.
i'd even say go for PC3500. most 2500 bartons can go to FSB of 210 or even higher.
in that case, you don't want the ram to stop you from overclocking even higher.
very generally speaking, the timings won't help you achieve much more performance.
running SYNC will!!
