2500 Barton and UnderClocking???

Anyone ever tried this. I have an athlon 2500 and I was wondering if there is any way but lowering the multiplier FSB and voltage I could get the processor down to just running with the stock heat sink. Does anyone know if you can do this within reason (like by loosing 500mhz or less)?

Madman, you don't have to underclock your Barton to be able to use the stock hsf! If it's running a bit too hot, buy a few 80mm fans. You can actually overclock a 2500 to 2.2ghz with the stock hsf. But, yes, you can underclock it to either 1463mhz, or to 1100mhz, by changing the fsb in the bios to either 133 or 100.

lol, I was not refering to the heat sink fan but the heat sink alone. As in can I overclock it enough where I could remove the fan and only use the heatsink.

Yes you can but just to let you know the CPU will run cooler with the little Fan on it and overclocked from 2500+ to a 3200+ 2.2Ghz Then it would if you lower the voltage and run the CPU at 700Mhz or 800Mhz 🙂 Without the small fan.

But to answer your Question sure you can underclock it no problem just Put the Multiplier to the lowest it can go and put the FSB as low as it can go thats 100FSB or less and you will be able to take off the FAN !!! Make sure you also put down the Voltage Slowly testing each time to see if it still boots into windows every timr u lower the Valtage otherwise you will hafta reset the Cmos cause your system wont boot up anymore 😀 Also test to see if the system is stable at the lower Valtage if its not you will hafta put it back up a little untill it is stable Another thing you could do is buy a Thermal Take Silent boost Its got a really nice heat sink and the fan makes no noise at all 😀 its stealthy running that heat sink without no fan would be allot better then using the stock AMD sink ... as it has more surface area and is made from copper. using it with the Silent fan would be even better.

Madman, too bad you didn't actually mention you're intentions in your first post, or I would have given you the advice you were looking for.🙂 If silence is so important to you, why not run your processor overclocked to 11x200, and use a peltier for cooling? Here's a link to one of the many sites that sell peltiers:
link. Watercooling is also a good way to go, if you're worried about noise, since you can get all the performance you paid for, without the noise from all of the fans.

actually he did state his intentions as he only mentioned using the heat sink, not the hsf (f = fan).

Anyway, I would agree with myocardia, water cooling is an awesome way to go way silent while getting great cooling, only drawback is it's price compared to a heat sink you all-ready have. Good luck with that

I don't see the point of doing this. Just get a sloww a$$ CPU to start with.
😉

lol, good idea, save money and much simpler

Or get a mobile version, the 2500+ runs on 1.45V so it should be considerably cooler.
OT: Madman, what year are you at UIUC?

Thanks for the advice guys. I bought the CPU cause it was the best performance per dollar. The processor is being used in an HTPC. My original idea was to buy an OEM processor and get a heatsink fan combo that would be like in the 20db range. But on the day i purchased this processor the retail was only like $5 more so I thought I would give the AMD fan a try. While it is not loud it is far from silent. I dont really want to spend much money for now and I was contemplating adding a small resistor to bring the rpms down while underclocking it to a 2000+. Someone asked why I didn't just get a slower processor to start with, but I was under the impression the barton was a better chip and only about $30 more than the slowest Athlon XP. At the same time I didn't want to go PIII 700 because I wanted the newer board/mem etc for performance and upgrades. So in the end I may play with watercooling but more than likely will end up trying one of the silent HS and Fan combos. oh BTW Monkey Drive Express, I am a Junior at UIUC.
