250 GTS...enough at 1680x1050?

Would a 250GTS suffice when playing far cry 2 and crysis at 1680 resolution or would I have to move up to a 4870? (since 260gtx will not fit in my case). Btw..i use XP and dx9 if it makes a difference in any way.

As long as you are not using AA, it's fine for FC2, IMO. Probably not so hot for Crysis, though.

yes, i dont plan to use AA..although i'd like highest settings if possible.

For Crysis, absolutely not. For Farcry 2, maybe.

so im guessing ill have to go for the 4870? thing is i've heard the drivers for ati are crappier for xp than nvidia..so im afraid the diff. wont be a lot. im confused

I have an 8800GT, FC2 @ 1680@1050 highest settings, I get over 55 fps avg, Phenom X3 CPU.

Crysis, OTOH, is 1280x1024 with a mix of high and medium settings.

The GTS250 will be somewhat faster than the 8800GT.

You basically need a multi-GPU solution to run Crysis at 1680 res with the highest settings.

I've used both ATI and Nvidia cards, no real driver-related problems with either.

Have you checked out any reviews? They pretty much tell the story between the 2 cards.

Jesus guys. Yes it definitely enough for 1680x1050.

You've gotta list your other hardware though. for all we know you might be gaming with a S754 board with pci express.

I have an E8400, 4gb ram, dfi dk p35 mobo

yea that's more than enough cpu power to play FC2 at 1680, in crysis u will hafta turn some of the settings down from ultra.

Still, 4870 512mb is only 235 $ ( with 30 mir), so I would take that if I were you. Even if in FC 2 there isn't much of a difference, other games run much faster on it. It's only 4 $ more and a much better card!!!!! Oh, did I mentioned that the Asus model I've linked you at is factory overclocked?

agreed. didnt realize the 4870 was the same price. If that's the case then by all means its a no brainer, especially since the ASUS top is overclocked hard.:0 add to that the 4870 supports 10.1 which has showed improved performance in games that support it, and its a done deal.

What's nvidia thinking selling at those prices?

i swear a read a review somehwere saying that cooler is kinda crappy and fairly noisy too i think

There is a difference of 2 db between them. Very noisy indeed. And temps do seem ok to me. Oh and if heat is so important, you'll see that ATi card is exhausting the hot air outside the case, while GTS spits it inside the case, keeping everything nice and warm.

Even if it was noisier by a long margin, I think that by sacrificing performance for quietness is not an efficient way of gaming. If you want a quiet card, get a passive 9600 GT. It's going to suck in games, but it's quiet!

I benched a GTS250 yesterday with 1GB ram. In far cry 2 with EVERYTHING on ultra high 4x aa, it gets 28fps MINIMUM at 1680*1050. This is with a 3,2ghz core i7 and 6gb ddr3. In the ranch small benchmark btw, with dx10.

Have yet to bench Crysis Warhead with it though, but it will most likely fare less well in Warhead. If the HD4870 512mb = GTS250 in price, even if it's the 1GB version, grab a HD4870.

So you're getting a slower card just because you can't fit a faster one in your case? So ok then, get the GTS 250, it will run FC 2 at 4x AA with no problems.

damnit...i thought the reference 4870s are 9.5...why would others make it longer..doesn't make sense and they probably lose market as well.

actually you're right. I took some proportional measurements of pics of different versions and it looks like the reference, asus and sapphire are very close in length..somewhere between a 250 and 260 from nvidia..so it should probably fit in my antec plus (or solo).

So i'm probably gonna go with one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102825 (new vapor-x, better cooling/noise?)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814102815 (old toxic, better performance?)
