Sometimes I think the world is a karma. 26 years ago, I was in junior high school and one day I was going to my friend's home. He lived on 5th floor. When I walked on the stairs, I saw this little kitten playing on 3rd floor. Such a cutie. I wished I would have a kitten like that. A few days later, my father's colleague visited us and brought a kitten with him. This is exactly the same kitten I saw. It turned out that my father's colleague lived in that same building on 3rd floor. That's the reason he came to us because it's hard for him to raise a cat there. At that time, my family lived in the one-story building near the campus. I was so grateful to have the little kitten. She was friendly and funny, enjoyed her life. She walked around the ground, chased hens and roasters and played with the grasshoppers.
A year passed and the winter was cold and fierce. Back in 80s we had to burn coal and wood to keep warm on ground building. Those were temporary buildings for teachers and our home was about 200 square feet total. One night was extremely cold. We kept the burning coal in the stove and went to bed......I woke up in the morning, saw the clear sky, couldn't move my arms and legs, and found out I was lying outside. I knew I got monoxide intoxication during the night. It was my father managed to open the door and carried us out to the fresh air.
Then my cat ran to the neighbor's door and scratched it like crazy. She meowed like I never heard before. My father knocked their door and no one answered so he broke in and found the neighbors monoxide intoxicated. Their stove was full of half-burned coals too. My father carried them out and they were disoriented but safe at last.
I feel lucky to survive that day and I enjoy my life. After so many years I have another cute cat just like Garfield. Fortunately the gas detector is installed in the kitchen now.
