Hi there,

hope you all are well!

A big dilemma i have here.
I need a monitor, for general use - some gaming, some coding, and heavy web surfing along with word/excel etc, lots of research and studies.

I am quite afraid of 27" - think it might be too big, so i wonder if 25" good, or should i pull the trigger on 27"?
Now I am using a 15.6" 1080p, no scaling, everything is pretty small, but it gives me pretty high PPI. I am sitting close to it, and its good for me.

Thank you for suggestions!

15.6" is your current screen? I assume that's a laptop screen? I can't imagine a desktop monitor being that small.

I'm using a 40" 4K UHD TV as a PC monitor. I think it's great!

If I were choosing between a 25" and a 27" 1440P, I'd go with the 27", IFF the price difference wasn't too significant.

Are there other aspects of the two display choices, that might be more significant, such as mfg, panel type, refresh rate / persistance, color depth of the panel, etc.?

Whoops, didnt mentioned, it sure is a laptop. :) I want some more real estate and comfortable sitting, but have limited space - about 24inch (60cm) desk.

Speaking about other aspects - IPS for sure, and since im not a competitive gamer, 60Hz should suffice, at least for now.

What I am looking at now is basically: Dell U2518D and AOC Q2790PQU, the AOC is even cheaper than the DELL.

If i could check these in the shops, i would not be asking over the internet, i visited 4 shops, and not one consultant agreed to turn on any of the monitors, lol. So it is even harder, when i have no idea if 27" wont be too big for me...

In my recommendation to get the larger of the two screens, I didn't realize that you had limited desk size. I do also recommend an IPS display, if you're using it for text, photos, or video.

Most monitors have specs on overall HxWxD (with stand), check that against your desk's dimensions.

Either I didnt quite get this thing about overall dimensions specs, or its hard to measure.

Because i know the specs of the 27" monitor, i know the size of the desk, but i still have no idea if its enough or not. 24 inch depth desk seems small. BUT all over the internet, including youtube PC desk setups i see lots of 24 inch desks with 29 and even 34" monitors...

doesn't surprise me the 27" is less expensive, there's far more QHD 27" panels made than any other size. also it's a less premium brand.

when i first got a 27" 1440p screen at home, i thought it was too big. but i got used to it pretty quickly.

i havea 24" 1440p screen here at the office, it's a very nice professional unit from lenovo that doesn't appear to be manufactured anymore. i sit pretty close to it so the smallish size doesn't bug me.

But what is your distance from 27"?

Been back and fourth and all over from 22-27'' inches and i always find the 24'' 1080p monitors my absolute favorite. Everything is up in my face and my vision isn't even remotely impacted. Waiting to see if there is ever gonna be a 25'' freesync 1440p as that's the only thing getting me to jump from my 24'' 1080p freesync. Never tried a 25'' but i got a feeling its maybe gonna be at its max for my comfort.

For absolute ppi i would be all over a 25'' 1440p but i think all of them are locked to 60hz 5ms IPS panels only? I only want 75hz and 1ms. I could skip freesync i can't use it on my current monitor due to lack of display port and being on nvidia but locking in fast sync on some titles feels just to amazing to give this up for anything less then a immediate 1440p replacement in the 25'' range.

I have a 27" 1440p monitor, and sit 22" from it. I was overwhelmed by the size when I first got it (I had a 19" before it), but got used to it pretty quick. Get one from a store with a good return policy, and try it.

I had two PB258Q (25" 1440p 60hz IPS) for about 2 years, before selling them (for nearly what I had originally paid for them), and replacing with a single 43" "4k 60hz IPS and a 27" 1440p 144hz VA for gaming.

I prefer the 27" 1440p resolution over 25" 1440p, but both are honestly fine, I just prefer the slightly larger panel.

I did this with my current monitor, not that i wanna abuse a return policy but if we can test drive cars why the heck not monitors? Its a object that may be sitting on a desk perhaps 5+ years. Should certainly see one in person and play with it before investing in such a long term thing. Demos at store are trash, you never get to game at least the locations i found these things at. That does nothing to sell me a monitor sorry.

how do you have that set up? i'm kinda kicking around getting an ultrawide for gaming (though, that would require gaming) but i really have no place to put another monitor. getting an arm and being able to swing it back and forth *might* be workable

I have the 43" wall mounted behind the desk, and the 27" on a gas-spring arm, when doing serious gaming I move the 27" front and center, but for media watching, I use the 43" 4k primarily with the 27" off on the side for web browsing.

The same for me with my monitor and t.v. I got a 40'' Samsung which has more ppi slightly then 27'' 1440. I need a switch or something cause i gotta move the hdmi cable from my 1080ti and monitor to tv every time i get in mood for GTA V which is all i play on the tv as i use controlller. :) With mods absolute fun but i could use a switch or something or a dual hdmi card. To much input lag to be used as a regular monitor for fast paced stuff.
