This is not the best bank bonus around. However, having a HSBC checking account could be useful if you plan to open or already have a HSBC e-savings account currently with 5.05% APY, which is considered to be quite a good yield. (see hsbcdirect.com)
Please note that HSBC used to (and may be still does) convert your free checking to "non-free" basic checking if you do not have "branch-related activity" within a two-month period. One way to prevent this is to set-up an automatic recurring bill payments from your other bank account to your HSBC free checking account. ACH transfers were/?are? not considered to be relevant activity to avoid the account conversion.
