DA: So you were doing 50 in a 35 zone?
Me: Yes sir
DA: How about we reduce this to two parking tickets and school.
Me: Well, I was hoping to not get school, no points, and only pay for one parking ticket.
DA: Oh yeah!? WHY? (Getting a small tone to his voice, like he was doing me a favor with his offer)
Me: Well, for starters my community involvement. I have heavily involved in our town and with many other organization.
DA: Which ones?
Me: Spewed off a few...
DA: hmm? Okay one parking ticket no school.
Me: Thank you sir, have a good evening.

Good luck! Negotiate and be firm!

you met with the district attorney over a speeding ticket?????

small town...

IIRC, when I got a speeding ticket and went to the courthouse, I was met by the (or a? can you have more than one?) DA, and this was my conversation:

DA: So you were going 48 in a 35 zone?
Me: yes sir.
DA: How old are you?
Me: 17 sir
DA: Hmm, you have a clean record and this is your first offense...alright, how about we reduce this to a 44 in a 35 so you don't get any points, and you just pay the fine and court fee?
Me: Yes sir, thank you sir.
DA: Just stay out of trouble for 3 years and it won't go on your record
Me: Yes sir, I will sir.

I think if you just go to the courthouse and be polite and respectful, the DA will cut you a deal since you've had a clean record. But that's just my $0.02

Appreciate all the feedback guys.

I've spoken with some people at work and gotten some good info. I have a choice of paying, going to mitigation, or contesting the ticket. I've been told that I'll want to mitigate the ticket to go in and explain circumstances. It's at that time that I will have an option of a deferrment. I pay the fine, stay ticket free for 6 months, and it doesn't go on my record.

Haha, you pulled over cause he pointed at the side of the road? It's not like he was going to catch you on foot if you just kept going.

Likewise.
Sweet. Then a cop will knock on your door later that evening and ask you why you didn't stop earlier when motioned to do so. Or, if the cop didn't have time to get your plate at 72 you can be he wasn't stupid enough to rely on people being simply kind - he'd have gotten on the radio immediately and told somebody up the road to stop a Jimmy. Then, you've got your ticket for the speeding, plus not stopping for a police officer. I'll take the first one only thanks :)
Exactly.

Bull sh!t. Even if the cop did come to your door, which he wouldn't, you answer the door and have this conversation:

"Hello sir, can I help you?"
"Why didn't you stop on the freeway earlier?"
"I haven't been on the freeway all day. Maybe my wife/husband/friend/brother/child/etc borrowed the car. Lots fo people drive it, I don't always keep track of where it is."
"hmm, are any of them hree now so I can ask them?"
"Nope, looks like everyone's gone."

Get real.

Like I said, cops aren't morons. Let's say you have tinting on your back window and a camera gets you for a red-light ticket. The picture has only your plate. Do you think you're going to get let off simply because they can't prove who was driving at the time? The cop in your story will either throw the ticket at you, since the car is registered in your name, or have your wife/child, etc. go and pay it.

Trooper standing on the side of the road, points me out and points to the curb. 72 in a 60. I was going with the traffic, had a car in front of me and behind me to my right.

7+ years with no tickets, no accidents. I'm hoping to get a deferral (stay straight for X days and it won't go on my record) so that our insurance won't get jacked.

Any advice for doing so?

Details:
Washington State Trooper; used a Laser
72 in a 60mph Zone
South Bound Interstate 5 just south of Marysville

Did the cop who pointed you to the side of the curb actually ticket you?

Dude wasn't just going for a walk, he was standing right next to his cruiser.

Not defending the idea of ignoring a cop but the red light camera ticket is not a good analogy. Tickets issued by camera are assigned to the car like a parking ticket, not the driver. At least that is how it works here in Virginia to avoid all those due process type questions.

Well, I think it's safe to say that if they have your plate and you continue to run they are not going to fall for any tricks. There ARE in existence cameras that can get people for speeding, and they still work if you have tinting or not.

Yup!

That sucks, if he was only clocking you and another cop ticketed you then either:

A) It would be illegal (only a few states)
or
B) Both officers would have to appear in court if you contested it (almost every state)

Sorry to break it to you, but you broke the law. The speed limit is 60, right? Just take a class and it wont go on your record.

first thing did he have a radar gun, if not then what the hell did you stop for, second if its your first ticket fight it, they will take away the points for sure, unless you do something stupid and threaten the judge or something.

That's how it's worked every time i've gotten a ticket.

A suit maybe a bit over board but I would recommend contacting your County Clerks office prior to your arriving and requesting court supervision. It is always better to let them know your intentions before you show up in court. Court supervision tends to last 90 days and so long as you don't get another ticket your record is not affected/insurance is not contacted. You can do this at least twice without having to attend any class but the price of the ticket does increase.

I don't remember putting blame on anyone else. I even stated that I was choosing the mitigation option. Basically saying, yes I was speeding, but I want to explain circumstances for possible leniency (sp?). The thread is basically asking for constructive advice on getting that. If ya just wanna come in here and flame me for no apparent reason, then save your time, my time, and a tiny bit of bandwidth by not posting in my thread. The forums are bad enough with the "upgrade" ;)

if you don't want to bother with going to court, insurance, and all that crap, just get a lawyer. that's what i did, sent the guy 300 bucks in the mail, and didn't even have to go to court. ticket was dismissed, easy as pie.
