24x won't burn at 24x

I have a lite-on 24x burner, but for some reason it won't burn at anything higher then 8x or so. I use Nero 5.0 and have settings set at 24x to burn, and i have 24x cd-r's as well. I use windows ME, if that makes a difference.
Any ideas? Thanks

I have the settings set to burn at 24x, but it still burns at 8x speed or so. I mean it takes 10 minutes to burn a cd

Try to do the following things.

-Check lite-on for a firmware update, sometimes a burner can't burn correctly on certain types of CDR media (I have had it with half the burners that after a firmware update the media worked great)
-Update your version of Nero to the latest which is Nero 5.5.6.4. If you own Nero 5 or Nero 5.5 the update is for free. Goto Nero
-Is DMA enabled in Windows ME, DMA can have a huge effect. You must enable it!

Enable DMA like this:
Windows 95B/98/98SE/ME
1. In Windows, click the START button, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.
2. Double click SYSTEM in the Control Panel folder, then the DEVICE MANAGER tab. You see a list of devices in your system.
3. Click the CD-ROM icon, and choose your burner drive's Properties button.
4. Ensure that the DMA box is checked ON under the Settings tab.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for other devices that you will be recording from and recording to such as your hard drive and /or second CD-ROM or CD-Rewriter.
6. Reboot your computer for the change to take effect.

-If using a VIA chipset, try the latest IDE drivers from VIA (www.viaarena.com) or 4 in 1s

Thats about all for now!
