I would say the best bang for the buck humidor is a tupperware. Seals way better than a wood humidor. I eventually needed to re season my humidor. Maybe it was cheap?! Don't know, don't care.. But if you are going to tuck it away and hide it tupperware is a good idea so you can put that money into cigars.

For humidification me and my friends at cigarasylum for the most part use Hearfelt beads. http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/default.asp Just make sure you use distilled water no tap water. I run 60% beads so my sticks are on the dryer side. They burn better and dont go out for me.

60%?! thats way too dry man. 65% maybe still a bit harsh. 72% is perfect.

from someone who has smoked a ton of expensive cigars when the money was good,

i don't get humidors.

are you planning to store a large amount of cigars? and why?

i would just pop down to the cigar store and grab a davidoff numero uno, and eat it.
i go through cigars so fast you'd be shocked.

Anyway, while a humidor is a nice piece of house bling, do you really need it? i even bought a 20 pc box of cohiba esplendidos, kept them in the box, and they didn't dry out noticeably before they were finished.

Buying in bulk is cheaper and you can further age cigars by holding them. You have to be careful about mold and beetles though. I mean if you can smoke 20 cigars before they dry out then cool. I try to keep my habit at like 6 per year.

The key to a good humidor is a tight seal. You don't have to spend a ton on a humidor, just make sure it at least passed the dollar bill and lid drop test.

Second, get one with no glass. I'd recommend a completely enclosed box, meaning no glass windows. I want a very controlled environment in my humidor, with no light.

Third, if you are thinking a 50 cigar count, get 100. It will give you plenty of room for keeping a variety of cigars, however rule of thumb, you need to keep your humidor 75% full so your humidification device isn't constantly struggling.

Fourth, ideal conditions for a humidor is the 70/70 rule. 70 degrees at 70 percent humidity. Easiest way to do this is get some Boveda packs. By far the easiest way to maintain proper conditions in your humidor. The temperature though will really depend on where you store your humidor. You'll have little control over that. Just try and keep it in a cool place in your home. No direct light.

Fifth, get a good digital hygrometer. Analog ones are normally junk. Toss it and get a good digital one. Normally under $50. Make sure you calibrate it before using it though.

Sixth, you'll need to properly season your humidor. 3 ways to do this:
- Wipe down the inside with distilled water. Within 48 hrs it should be ready. (Would not recommend with high end humidors)
- Fill a shot glass with water. Set it in the center of your humidor and close it for like 2 weeks, or until your humidity balances out.
- Get a seasoning Boveda pack, throw it in your humidor, close it for 2 weeks and you're done.

I'd recommend the Boveda pack to season your humidor. Easiest for beginners.

Next, what you've been waiting for, humidor recommendations:

Entry/budget humidors
- Cigar count you'd like that passes the basic dollar/lid test. Also pick something that looks nice to you.
- Salvador is a good brand at this level.

Mid level nice humidors (brand name):
-Daniel Marshall
-Diamond Crown

High end (VERY nice)
- Elie Bleu
- Davidoff
- Prometheus

Now keep in mind, the high end humidors are extremely well constructed with a very nice seal, however that doesn't mean the budget humidors won't work. On the contrary, they will normally get the job done at a fraction of the price. The higher end humidors are more artwork than anything else. Definitely not essential to storing cigars in a good environment.

Anyway, that should hopefully get you started.

Those cigar lounges in town seem like the pinnacle of masculinity. All those tough guys in there. Testosterone overload.

This I thought when I first started with 70% beads. The 60% beads in reality are always holding over 60%. You'd be surprised how dry you could go with a cigar as long as you arent trying to smoke it fast. To each their own..

Not everyone sucks down cigars in such rapid succession. I have a number of friends that like to keep a variety on hand.

I have some friends that do a lot of overseas bulk orders, I figure as I learn and grown I'll want a variety of cigars and I'll want to age them. I also want something nice to look at on my whiskey bar (that's not whisky). I also at least at first don't see myself smoking more than 2-3 times a month. I'm not sure I'd want to muck up my pallet when I'm drinking the more high end whisky I own. It would be more of a change of pace rather than a every get together kind of thing.
Ive ordered a lot that way in the past. Havent lately since I have a kid now. Have your friends talked about freezing the cigars to kill off the Beatles?

My stash..

Yea, they are really into it. I just also like to do my own homework in addition to taking the advice of friends. My first cigar ever was a few weeks ago and was a
El Rey del Mundo Demi Tasse (not sure on the age but he said he had been aging them a few years). I loved the way it balanced with my scotch.
Well enjoy the Cuban rabbit hole... Its deep and expensive lol.

My first couple humidors were inexpensive wood humidors in the 30-50 capacity range ..
I replaced them with a bigger tabletop that I stick on top of a half height bookcase ...

Big enough I can stick a couple full boxes of Partagas or whatever in it, as well as a bunch of random cigars for after dinner, BBQs, traveling, etc ...

For travel, I really like my herfidors from Cigars International

well spank my ass and call me shirley. i didnt think the cigar aficionado was so popular 'round here.

i admit i am a crass consumer when it comes to cigars, i buy them like i buy cigarettes.

Anyway, i've since moved on to the pipe .. well, to the vaporizer mostly, but i do keep a couple pipes around. Actually smoked a cohiba (not esplendido, i think a .. maduro ? a midsized one anyway) and didn't really enjoy it that much, since i lost the habit.

Likewise, i'm afraid i cannot recommend a humidor simply because i don't know much about them, but i want to chip in my 2c anyway, so "buy a pretty one".

I mean, having a nice hidden stash of something you only touch every now and then, i can totally relate to that; and a nice wooden box that looks great on your table, that too.
(fortunately i still have my collection of unusual ashtrays .. )

Bringing this back from the dead. I finally got myself a nice humidor for a little over a hundred bucks, it's cheap but it's ceder lined and holds temp/humidity with the beads. Making my first really big order of some cigars this weekend. Probably some Monte #2's and such.

Link? Also, where are you ordering cigars from online?
