I've given up on Windows 10 completely now, and as I reinstall Windows 7 on all my machines I'm noticing a distinct lack of GWX nags. Even after more than a week one of my fully updated Windows 7 ex-10 machines has no tray icon or WU advertising at all. I know GWX services have been active, as I was prompted by my firewall (I allowed them all). I like to imagine that GWX will just give up if it realises that your hardware ID has already been on 10 and rolled back. Can anyone confirm this behaviour?

You can disable the GWX stuff in the registry[1] and the Windows Update stuff in the group policy editor[2]. No rollback needed and just in case updates depend on the GWX one it stays installed.

I've had enough of the W10 goat screw and went back and clean installed W7 on my W8.1-10 machine... and just left off the 4 big updates (the GWX and initial telemetry ones.) I don't have any problems with it any longer.

As I understand it, once you go to W10 and then roll back, the GWX doesn't bother you... but MS may eventually 'fix' that, too.

I've heard that this is the case that rolling back makes it never bug you anymore. You already have a free upgrade license redeemed for that hardware ID so no reason to bug you anymore I guess.

What part of Win10 has been a problem? Mine has been pretty good with the annoying bugs that I had noticed being gone after the 1511 update (I have the first 1511 release and it didn't mess up my privacy settings either FWIW).

The Windows Update driver thing was one thing fixed in 1511. I did notice the original build was upgrading my drivers for me despite the settings, but they reworked the control panel function for that and it does seem to be behaving itself now.

I have also never run into any random programs getting loaded onto my computer. Sure, there is always the stuff that comes with Windows initially (and they do have a few extra pieces of junk included out of the box now), but nothing since then. Also I've never seen a single ad in Windows anywhere.

The UI is a personal preference. I agree it is a bit plain, but I wouldn't quite call it ugly IMO. Its just "OK" to me. I am hoping for some 3rd party skins and themes at some point so I can customize a bit more.

Drivers I can see a sticking point, but blame nVidia etc for that one. Side note, I haven't noticed any missing features in my Radeon driver package.

The "Bipolar setting/control panel system" as you called it is a bit annoying and I haven't figured out where everything is quite yet.

I also haven't messed with high DPI scaling since I just run 1920x1080 and the regular DPI is perfectly fine for me. If I had a 4k display maybe that would be different, but I've always found DPI scaling to be mediocre at best in the past so I guess I wouldn't have expected much there.

I've not tried Win10 on old hardware, unless my 2600k is considered old.

I had it on my 2500K game rig for a bit, and even updated my daughter's old dual core AMD Dell laptop (2007) and it actually worked pretty well... I was surprised particularly with the old laptop. It did hammer the CPU a bit with things running in the background.

I've since rolled the gamer back to W7 (clean reinstall) and the lappy is running Linux Mint now.

Candy crush was one of those 'included with windows' garbage things. It didn't self install, it comes with Windows now. Yay. Even so, minor annoyance because after I installed Windows 10 I uninstalled that stupid crushed candy thing and nothing else has randomly showed up.

I know about that, but that wasn't the question.

You asked if GWX would stop nagging you. I don't know the answer to your question with regards to the rollback but you can make it stop nagging you by doing those things.
