When nitrous runs lean there's a tendancy to "pop". I saw pictures of a 4.7 Dakota owner who was running a nitrous system that could not be used below 3000RPM. A friend was driving it, and let it go below 3000RPM. The composite intake shattered, and bent his hood. Look around and you'll find a picture of Pat Musi having a nitrous pop and Hot Rod magazine getting a great shot of it. iirc, it broke his windshield (cowl induction hood, pointed the blast backwards.)
I'm almost 100% sure that until the DC 4.7, the GM LS* has the injectors on the composite manifold. (the 4.7's a SOHC, and there's a stack of metal tube on the head leading in). In the 'vettes case the nitrous probably popped, shattered the intake, and the injectors proceeded to squirt fuel onto everything, including the very hot exhaust. That's what started the fire.
