2407WFP Aspect/Resolution Question

Hey all,

Going to be upgrading to a new monitor soon, probably the Dell 2407WFP 24" - looks like a beauty.

I've only gotten to use one of these a bit (not the 24", but a Dell LCD), but I have a question. (And it may be relevant, so OS will likely be Vista 64-bit; also will have an nVidia SLI configuration).

When playing with the thing, I noticed that if you launched a program that displays full screen in a 4:3 aspect ratio (say, 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution), it would stretch it to fill the screen. Preserving proper aspect ratio is a pet peeve of mine, so I actually want applications like that to display zoomed to the size of my display but with black bars. Is this possible?

I found a way to do this in the menu, but you had to access the monitor menu every time you wanted to do this with every signal change. I want it to automatically do this with this type of content.

I also found a way to display native resolutions, but this seemed to make apps like this display smaller than the screen - again, not what I really want.

Thanks in advance for any feedback about this!

THere is an option in the gfx control panel called flat panel scaling. There you can set how to handle games not in the native resolution. Few options there.

with all this talk about flat panel scaling I just tried it on mine....except my contro panel doesn't seem to have that option.

my 2405 has a 1:1 pixel mapping option on the monitor itself. With this set the game will use as many pixels as teh game tells it to. Mean black boxes all around if doing lower resolutions.

Does the 2407 not do this?!

Thanks for the responses.

Looked into the graphics options. Can't really test as I don't actually have a flat panel, but it looks like some of those might work. The problem I recall having is, those seem to be for the desktop itself. I think if you use an application that switches res, say a low-res game, it overrides that. But I'm not sure as I really can't test with what I've got now. The example I remember on the flat panel I was playing with was some of the WildGames (Dell stuff)...when you went into one, it would go to a res (800 x 600 for example) and not look right until you adjusted it on the monitor. As I recall, I played with the graphics card settings, though I'm not sure if I tried all these options. (This may just be an issue with WildGames, in which it's no big deal, but I was just wondering).

Yes, I know what you mean by 1:1 pixel mapping, but that does not solve my problem unfortunately. I do want it zoomed to fit the screen, even at a lower res - I just don't want it stretched or skewed to do so.

Any other input very welcome!

That's not possible with any monitor.

you can only zoom in as far as one pair of sides.

IF you turn on keep aspect ratio than it should fill the vertical screen but have black bars on the right and left.

The only option where there will be no black bars is to use a lower res that is the exact same ratio.

The 2407wfp has the Aspect Zoom option (as well as 1:1) The issue is that full zoom is the default, and for each *different resolution* you have to set the zoom option. However once you've set it for a specific res, it stays that way. So you only have to do it once for each resolution you play. I haven't fiddled with my zoom settings since the first week of having the monitor, every res I use is already set to aspect zoom.

Ahhh, okay, so you set it per resolution. That's no problem then. =o) Thanks!

(And in case I wasn't clear, I didn't mean filling the screen while keeping the aspect without black bars - I know black bars are necessary, and that's totally fine - I just want it as big as possible while keeping proper aspect ratio, and to know to do that automatically when I switch resolutions instead of always having to do it manually).
