Hi,
Does any one know if this monitor can be used with old VGA card (I know resolution will be low / this is temporary) on a an old Dell pentium (s) machine with Windows98?

Well the monitor supports a number of low resolutions, down to 1024 x 768, so I am sure the answer is yes. It will look like crap, but you already know that.

I have had the monitor running as low as 640 x 480 when switching video drivers, and as it has an analog input (as well as a DVI) I can't think of any reason at all why it would not work.

my boss has his 2405 running off an old tnt2 card under windows98. it works as expected.

It may work but I don't see the logic in dropping $800 on a new monitor and running it on severely outdated hardware.

I got an amazing Planar DVI monitor that runs natively at 1280x1024 for about $300 and that was a year ago.

When you run an LCD at non-standard (non-native) resolutions the effect is not pleasant. It's like viewing your image through about 1/2" of water.

The native resolution of the Dell 2405 is 1920x1200. Running it at a resolution lower that will result in this effect UNLESS your video drivers are able to display the lower-resolution image WITHOUT stretching, ie, black space all around the image - which is the same effect as buying a less expensive monitor.

If you're thinking that you'll buy it now and be ready for a hardware upgrade, realize that soon manufacturers will be needing to add HDCP ports to their monitors, which will drop the resale value of this monitor....and you won't be able to watch HDTV or HD DVD on this monitor.

So in essence, ayabe's got it right, I've just babbled on about it in detail because of the single word "why"

just run it in 1:1 mode.
you'll have a huge panel with only a small portion taken up by the screen.

I had the 2001 before the 2405, and I think the 2405 scales much better.

Q: Are you saying this monitor will not operate with HDTV & HDDVD via component or composite input connectors?
