My MB does´nt support the Barton.

Depends on what you're using it for. Depends on the other hardware in the machine. Depends on what you're paying for the 2400. But can't you assume that going from 1.x ghz to 2.0ghz is going to be pretty noticable in CPU intensive applications?

The comp is mostly for gaming and I´ve got a Radeon 9800 so my CPU seems a bit outdated, but i don´t
want to spend too much money on it.

I upgraded from an 1800+ Pally to a 2500+ Barton and then overclocked to 3000+ and it was well worth it.

I would say yours should make a good upgrade....planning on any o/c....even without it should give you a nice boost....what sort of cost are we looking at here? Do you need to get a new fan?.....or are you going retail anyway?

How much is too much? I've been looking at doing something similar, but instead of going just from a 1600+ to a 2400+, here's what I plan to do:

Shuttle AN35N Ultra mainboard (~$60 @ newegg)

Barton 2500+ ($85 @ newegg)

at least 512MB PC3200 RAM (~$85-90 for 512MB stick, various places)

I'm probably going to do this in stages, rather than all at once; get the mainboard first and see how far I can push my existing memory & processor, get the new RAM later (can't use the 333fsb Barton with the PC2100 that I have now), and pick up the processor last.

I went from a 1600+ to a 2600+ (266fsb), and yes it was noticable. My 9700PRO is similar to your 9800, so you will see about a 2.5k increase in 3dmark01 scores (mine went from 12.5k to 15.8k). Your games will be a lot smother with more eye candy. That is a low cost upgrade, with some bang.

Thanks for the advice!

and yeah, i´m going to overclock.
BTW I have 256 mb of PC2100 RAM and 512 mb of PC2700, will the slower memory limit the fsb increase?

yeah,it probably will. You might get lucky though - I have heard of some PC2100 stuff reaching 2700 speeds.

Hmm.. I ordered the boxed version, how good is the Hs/f that comes with this CPU?

It's fine at spec. I believe AMD uses the same cooler for the entire line of Athlon XPs, so it should be good for moderate overclocking (although your temps will probably be higher than with an aftermarket cooler). I wouldn't try to push it past 3000+ speeds without a better cooling solution on there, although it might be fine depending on your case setup and how much airflow it gets.

I'm using the stock cooler on a 2500+ at 3200+ speeds and the stock cooler is keeping me at 45C at idle and 51C at load.

This is the cooler that came with my XP2400+ retail box. It looks like a pretty decent cooler - it's rated through an XP3200+ with that crappy 18CFM fan on it. You should be OK with it as it is, but it would be much better with a higher flowing fan.

I was going to use it, but my computer is very cramped inside, so I ended up getting on the Thermalright SLK900A cooler for $20 deal in the hot deal forum. I'm currently running my Abit KT7-RAID with an xp2400+@2.2GHz. It just got done with 24 hours of Prime95, and it runs at 45 deg. C idle, and 51 deg. full load with the SLK900A and Ceramique thermal paste. Good luck!

Use it while you shop for a replacement. The major deficiency is the thin 60mm fan and need of an adapter to use larger fans. If it is the AJIGO, it is better than you might think.

Ahh.. Hope I get that Ajigo cooler, looks good.
I´ve already got a Taisol CKG 760092 that I´m using with my 1600+, I don´t how good that heatsink would be with a better fan.

No it won't be fine at all. AMD has been in business for 20+ years and all their heatsink/fan combos are nothing more than paperweights. If they actually made the heatsink able to perform like it was suppose to, they might be able to stand behind their product by putting a 3 year warranty on boxed processors.

I don't know how many times I've seen people ask this same question. What do you think? That AMD sells you a cooler that can't cool the cpu that it comes with?

Uhh.. WTF, I asked if the cooler was good, not if it could cool the CPU properly. UNDERSTAND?
