24: The best idea in network TV in many years?

Noriaki

Lifer
I'm not talking about the Genre of 24...maybe you like it...maybe you don't.
I'm not even talking about the 1 to 1 correspondance in time...

But just the whole long ongoing story line. It could work with a 1 day per epside thing..or whatever.

Shows like Star Trek Next Gen or Simpsons or whatever never accomplish anything. I think Simpson's even made a joke to that effect once. Not that I'm dissing simpons or anything, those 2 are 2 of my favourite shows and have been for years and years.

But I really like the long ongoing story line ya know? Where events happen that don't have to have a resolution within one hour or one half hour. Things can happen and carry on for 5 or 6 episodes.

Granted it makes it pretty hard to get in in the middle...and watching them out of order would be pointless...but I still think that the long ongoing storyline makes for a very interesting show.

Kinda makes me think of my reading habits..when I was 12-15 or so I would read dragonlance novels...short and easy to read. Tackled the Lord of the Rings once when I was 14 but I couldn't finish it.
Went at it again when I was 16, and I've never gone back.
Now I only read the likes of Martin and to a lesser extent Jordan and Goodkind...where they have multi-volume stories with each one being 600+ pages.

I find TV to be the same way...the shorter stories were nice when I had the attention span of a fruit fly, but now I like ongoing stories, and I can keep the details straight in my mind better...

I'm sure there are many other series that do something similar, and 24 shouldn't get all the credit, but it's the most popular right now that I know of.

So what do you think, do the ongoing story lines make more interesting TV? Or do you prefer the short stories?

i disagree. tv is tv.... all those melodramas are the same really. 24 is nothing impressive, other than the fact that it has succeeded in convincing a bunch of people that they are getting something new. Sorry, don't mean to crap on your thread, but you did ask. 😀

i dont know, i dont see wwhat's so special about it, it's just television, and i think the show sucks anyway, but tha'ts just me

Babylon 5 is also one ongoing storyline, where the characters build and change as the years go on. It's the best TV show I've ever seen.

I guess I'll start watching 24, then...

Good job on totally missing the point 😉

It could be a show like Babylon 5 if you want...or even a cartoon.

The melodrama part isn't the point. I don't think 24 is that good of a show. I just think the idea behind it of 1 long ongoing storyline is cool.

<< I guess I'll start watching 24, then... >>

Don't bother...it's really not that great.

Babylon5 would probably be a better example, but I didn't think of it, having never watched it myself.

The title was poorly worded...

I would like to watch '24' but the fact that it is a real time, ongoing storyline makes it difficult for me to watch. I am not enough of a tv junkie to make sure I watched 24 consecutive shows. I never started watching because I figured I would miss too many episodes and be lost.

no prob! 😀

actually... i reread your post and either i did get your point, or I still don't get it.

<< But just the whole long ongoing story line >>

nothing new about ongoing story lines.... been around since Homer and the Illiad.

Me tired, though, so please shoot me if I am making an ass out of myself. *heehaw*

No no you are right, the title is bad...it's not new.

I'm just comparing long ongoing story lines against the one at a time shows.
Really just wondering which type people prefer.

I shouldn't have said "new" because you are quite right they aren't...and '24' was just one example, and you are right, it's not a terribly good show.

The "Good job on missing the point" was just a joke. I was just givin' you a hard time cuz that's what I do haha 😉

<< haha i wasn't offended in the least, but if you feel bad you can giveme a 10 rating. 😀 >>

I didn't think you were offended, and I don't feel bad.....but deal anyhow 😉

The originality of 24 is also the death of it.

I have *never* in my life watched a series on TV religiously....but even now the 24 thing is kinda dragging on.

First 8 episodes i watched every tuesday or whatever...but now i find myself taping them and fast forwarding just to pick up major plot twists.

Still probably the best shown on TV IMHO and i eat it up, but i can definitely see how the ratings must suck because so few have the ability to catch a show every week for months on end.....

Hahah what's that say about me?

<--- hasn't missed an episode of 24.

And I don't even think it's that great. I think it's better than most of the crap on TV, but it's a far cry from being "great". I could live with myself if I missed an episode, but I haven't yet.

not in real time though😛

i think 24's the first decent action/adventure(i'm not sure how to catagorize it) sh*t i've seen on network television in a while😛 alias is amusing to a lesser degree, more dumber fun🙂

hbo's been spoiling me🙁 sex and the city, sopranos etc.. so good🙂

shows i watch😛
the practice
west wing
friends(slowly losing reason to)
fraiser
60 minutes-60minutes II
Enterprise
alias
24-duh
sex and the city
sopranos
simpsons/familyguy/futurama

yes i watch too much tv🙂

Farscape has a great ongoing storyline, maybe you should check that out. Infact, lots of sci-fi does. Babylon 5, Andromeda, etc... Star Trek has just the general theme of the show but can go pretty much anywhere.

24 and Enterprise are the only 2 shows I bother watching at all. I work nights, and I'm off tuesday, so I make an effort to watch it. Enterprise is replayed when I get home from work sunday, so I end up watching that one often.

I think 24 is a great show, its novel in the same way that Memento was a novel movie. It's a gimmick that worked. 24 to me drags when they focus on the family issues with the senator. Also this weeks last episode was kind of a filler to get to what was happening at the end of it.

Might want to check out The Shield on FX at 10 eastern Tuesdays. They have only showed two episodes sofar but both were great and knowing FX they will probably show both again sometime this weekend.
