Dennis Haysbert likes to believe his portrayal as the first African-American U.S. president on Fox's "24" may have helped pave the way for Barack Obama.

"If anything, my portrayal of David Palmer, I think, may have helped open the eyes of the American people," said the actor, who has contributed $2,300 to the Illinois Democrat's presidential campaign.

Just curious what people's thoughts are on that? My initial reaction is to think Haysbert is full of himself, but the more I think about it, I think he does make a legitimate statement.

The fact that (Season 1 spoiler) the assassination plot from Season 1 wasn't about his race, although we were lead to believe it would (/Season 1 spoiler) was good storytelling by the 24 producers.

I'll bet more Americans watch 24 than catch up on the current political issues. It's an interesting thing to say, not sure exactly how I feel about it, but it's definitely interesting. I don't think we should ignore how much TV influences the American people - I mean, watching violent movies turns us into murders so I don't see why it wouldn't help Barrack. Really tho, who knows, maybe it helped a bit.

Heh, I'm sure most haven't. I'm assuming Haysbert is not outright saying something like "Obama wouldn't be where he is if not for my portrayal of a black president!"

But 24 was revolutionary at the time in a number of ways and whether people watched the show or not, certain aspects of it are likely familiar to a number of people. (Ticking clock, real-time action, black president)

Whatever, he didn't pave the way for a black president by any stretch, but he did have us all wondering if we were in good hands with our car insurance.

I think Colin Powell paved the way for the possibility of a black president, even though he ultimately declined to run. I'd still vote for him given the chance.

What, you mean with random events occurring that make almost no sense and include constant changes of allegiances and random new bad guys every single hour? Or are you referring to idiot daughters having to hide out in seemingly chilly cabins with wifebeaters on?

Morgan Freeman and others have been playing black presidents for years. Unfortunately, I see them all as actors including Obama, meaning I can't see them truly leading a country.
