24-pin psu with no adapter on 20 pin Mobo

as the title says, i'm wondering if i can hook up a 24 pin psu on a 20 pin motherboard (NOT A 20 PIN PSU ON A 24 PIN MOBO DONT DIRECT ME TO THE LINK ON GEN. HARDWARE... 😛). I was wondering if you could just hook it up with the 4 extra pins just hanging off the side. from what i can tell looking at the adapter the pins are totally identical and it just so happens that if i put my psu in without the adapter it goes in just fine without any clearance issues.

I'm trying to get rid of as many wires and clutter as possible and if im able to do this it would help somewhat.... anyway if anyone knows if its safe to boot like this then please let me know.

short answer, you might be able to since the pins line up. However, Im not sure if there would be any unforeseen problems.

It will work fine as long as you have clearance off the end opposite the orange wires end. The orange wires have to be inside and against one end of the 20-pin socket - if you are looking at the latch nib on the socket, the clearance would need to be off the left end. The latches have to be on the same side though they might not line up - if not, use a couple dabs of hot glue to hold the connectors together. You will have four pins hanging outside the opposite end from the orange wires ( 1 each of black, red, orange and yellow). Some 24-pin PSUs have a clever thing where the extra four contacts are actually detachable from the 20-pin part...
. I prefer to not use adapters if possible - removes potential weak spots from the power delivery chain.

yeah i prefer no adapters as well. i actually do have the adapter... id just rather not use it :b. the other problem now is that i would prefer not to have to actually glue anything together lol.

i tested a 20 pin on my asus sli dlx and as soon as i turned it on sparks flew from the board. u tell me wat u want to do...

Hey sparky,
What PSU gave you sparks? You would either have had to force the plug in the wrong way or used one of those damned non-standard Dell PSUs... Or maybe you figured out a unique way to do it wrong... Which is it.
