24" Monitor Recommendations

I can not begin to describe how frustrated I feel in my search for a new LCD monitor as there are just too many manufacturers and models to choose from in addition to dealing with the myriad of confusing specifications. I'm currently using a 19" Viewsonic GS790 CRT monitor but it's beginning to go south.

What I will be using it for is mainly web surfing and watching movies with no gaming. I would appreciate it if someone would steer me toward the top 3 manufacturers and models that I should be considering.

Yeah, I saw that on the Dell.ca site but it's $699 CDN, which seems excessive for an LCD monitor.

then get the cheapest TN monitor and don't complain about viewing angles or realistic colors.

Yeah, I saw that on the Dell.ca site but it's $699 CDN, which seems excessive for an LCD monitor.

Thanks for the extremely helpful comment.

I don't care about viewing angles as it'll be sitting right in front of me. As for realistic colours, I've heard some good comments about TN screens. Sure, the other technologies may be better, but I doubt twice as good.
 
ask yourself if TN is so good, why are there exactly 0 LCD TVs with it.
people who have non-TN monitor, never want to go back to it. but if it is fine with you, go ahead, you have recommendations in LCD panel thread that is on sticky.

I work with graphics all day. I can't claim to have seen every monitor, but the TN screens I've used have all sucked.
 
TN panels will never be good for use as an LCD TV because of the viewing angle. It's ok for use as a monitor, since a gigantic viewing angle isn't necessary. And for graphics works of any kind, it's a given that getting a TN panel is a bad idea.

I have an LG L246WP-BN which is s-pva, and I've had a 20wmgx2 NEC which is S-IPS.

My monitors at work are IPS 2007FP dells.

That said, I have an acer x193wbd which is TN as well. Unless you really are off center or its a giant monitor I'd have to say the TN monitor isn't bad at all (its 19" so its very unlikely i'd be off center of it).

It probably would be a bad idea to get a 30" TN monitor (if they made them which they dont).

24" I think maybe you'd notice on occasion if you were sitting somewhat far away that it was TN. But the color reproduction seems to have improved over the last 2-3 years and as long as you are reasonably within "center" of a TN monitor it looks fine. Unless you are an artist and need the most ridiculously perfect palette than maybe not.

My 19" TN monitor seems to do gradients a lot better than older TNs used to, so I think there have been improvements over the last 2-3 years. 3 years ago it was obvious if you had TN. Now it really only is if you do the looking from the bottom test. the left to right isn't even much worse than my LG monitor.

Also basically all LCD tvs below 26" are TN. So you are wrong.

GO out and look at a 15" 19" or 22" LCD tv and they will be TN.

All laptops are TN as well.

Well.....I have an s-pva Samsung 219tw and just bought a tn Lg w2452. I wanted the additional size. It absolutely kills the sammy in gaming and the picture quality is very good. Viewing angles? I sit a foot or two from the monitor just like most other people.....there are no viewing angles, LOL. I think the tn smack is very overdone. I like my LG and have no plans to return it (got it at BB almost three weeks ago.) Since the OP does no gaming then perhaps he should go for something like the HP with the wide color gamut....if color fidelity and PQ is of the highest importance.

There's no benefit to makers to make cheap PVA matrices for entry level 19" LCD TV, it is easiest to reuse cheapest TN monitor they can get their hands on. bad argument on your side "cheap TVs use TN"

not all laptops are TN, apple has perhaps still has IPS displays on top line models

The latest macbooks are still TN, including the pros . IPS displays use more power than TN ones because of extra switching logic and more power ful backlights.

I did some research just to find out if my assumption was correct and I guess I was wrong, though just barely, theres actually 2 laptops that are reasonably recent, the lenovo T60 flexview (IPS) that is not orderable anymore, and some fujitsu laptops with mva. The macbook pro that everyone claims is IPS isn't even IPS and people have the part numbers for the screens that proove it. They are just LED backlit which makes them look great (just like most netbook screens look a lot better because most netbooks are LED backlit)

I think for the most part peoples complaints about TN ar emostly because they started out in "cheap" monitors. A lot of what makes them look bad is that some of those cheap monitors have cheap backlights, or cheap electronics. Now that TN is in some higher priced monitors, some with LED backlighting the difference is not so big. I had an early 24" TN panel (for 3 days until I returned it, and at the time 24" non TN was $800) and it was terrible. But now , its not so bad.

I figure if you took say a dodge with a v6, vs a bmw with an inline-6 you'd blame V6s for why dodges are terrible, when in fact the reason the car sucked was it was a dodge.


That said, I"m posting this just for arguments sake. If you want a 24" monitor now, just get the 2408 while its $390 because it wont be for long.
 
I don't know about the specific lcd the OP is asking about..

but I'm color blind (not grayscale but fairly severely altered vision) and I prefer IPS. Color-blind or not, TN panels look terrible.. the whites are tinted with a yellowish shade. The only TN panel I could justify buying personally is the LG in the buyers guide with 0 input lag and 2ms response time. For gaming that would be exceptional to have but unfortunately it's 22" not 24". There's a 24" Samsung in there too that's TN and has 0 input lag and 5-6ms response time it would be one of my main choices. The Dell on sale if the canadian pricing is also onsale for you is the way to go for bang+buck.
