24" Monitor $300 budget

I have a 22" monitor now and am pretty happy with it. It's a TN panel, but I think it looks fine, but I wouldn't mind a bit more space, both physical space and some resolution. I want to stick with 16:10 as I want the extra vertical space.

This one looks pretty similar to what I have now, but bigger and brighter. I don't need or want speakers/webcam built in. I figure I'm going to be mostly looking at monitors similar to that one, but figued I'd check here is someone knew of a great monitor worth looking at in that price range.

It's either a new gun or a new monitor, the wife doesn't think I need either. 😛

My friend has that exact monitor and I have the 22" version of that one. That monitor actually looks very nice, the color reproduction is pretty accurate right out of the box and looks even better when adjusted. As for brightness it's plenty bright on the brightest settings. I keep mine a little lower than max because it hurts my eyes when it's dark 😛. In addition to all that, the monitor is pretty cheap. I remember buying my 22" at that price and I thought it was super cheap. This is a quality 24" at a very good price point.

I have the 22" version of that model, bought it cus it was one of the cheapest and I was using it for my 2nd computer which I don't use too often, but it is surprisingly good quality for the price. It is leaps and bounds better than my friend's cheap optiquest (viewsonic) 22" in picture quality, and the backlight bleeding is quite minimal. The horizontal viewing angles are really good for a TN, and the vertical are terrible as expected. I'm really happy with the 22" so the 24" at the value price seems like a good deal. The stand is pretty cheap btw, but I think that's a plus.

I've had a couple BenQ 19" monitors for quite a few years and they've been *very* good monitors. My recent monitor shopping had the BenQ G2400WD at the top of my TN list, but I ended up choosing the expensive option and bought some Dell 24"ers (2408WFP -- not TN panel). If you haven't checked out the G2400WD then it's worth a look.

I have a thing for Mossins, a very decent one can be had typically for under $200.

Thanks for the replies, I figured I'd be looking at monitors in that range pretty much. My current monitor (also an Acer) is rated at 300 cd/m2 and is bright enough. Thanks for the opinions.

I would go for the gun. Obama isn't about to sign a bill which bans 24" LCDs.
Then again, he might: only rich people use 24" LCDs! We should tax them!

Well, I doubt the Mossin will ever be banned, it holds 5 rounds, is bolt action, and is heavy/bulky.

I am leaning towards the monitor simply because it's something I'd use just about every day. I go to the range a lot less.

Haha... I only use one at a time, but bring a few to the range (the shotguns I have and rifle). I really don't have that many. The wife has a shot gun (20 gauge... she's little). I have two shot guns (16 gauge that used to be my dad's and a 12 gauge). I really don't shoot the 16 gauge much, the 12 gauge I use for skeet/trap. And currently my only other gun is a Mosin that is in pretty sad shape. I've been wanting to get a nicer one for a while. So it'd be more of a replacement/upgrade, even though I'd keep the other one it'd probably rarely to never see use again.

The monitor is kind of the same story. I have a perfectly usable 22" that is fine, but I wouldn't mind getting something a little nicer/newer. The monitor I'd use daily or close to daily, the gun not so much. But depending on the deals I find I'd go either way, whatever is the better deal I find. So basically I have one thing, the gun, that I rarely use but could really use an upgrade more. On the other hand I have something I use everyday and works fine as it is, the monitor, but I wouldn't mind going bigger just to go bigger. 🙂

Get the monitor. Like you said, you use it everyday. I hate to see nice, powerful computers wasting away running small monitors. Heck, it's the only part of your computer you actually look at everyday. May as well look at things big and brightly!

The monitor might even come in handy when used with a good infared night scope as a display/aiming tool. Get both, ask for a bail out or low interest government loan.
