Dont know if this is a hot deal, but this is the first time ive seen this drive anywhere...I was at the Palo Alto Frys, and they had a whole bunch of 24/10/40 TDK burners for $299...that beats the new 20/10/40 Yamaha...

This drive isnt a "true" 24x tho (starts off @ 16 i think then ramps up to 24x gradually) so i dont know how good of a deal this is...

yeah, i think they do in fact gradually get faster towards the (edge?). I don't know if this is CAV or the other thing, but it's make more sense to keep the cd spinning the same speed to reduce jitter and anomolies introduced by spinning a disc faster than a laser can track.

Anywho, I think Plextor is the only manufacturer that has a true 16x burn speed from core to edge. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I think its a ok price for the latest in speed, just think of how much 12x's were when they first came out.

i dont understand the point of going 24x.. when they dont do 24x straight..

how long does it take to burn the outer rim..???

My 12x scsi plextor works fine for me.. and it's superfast..

how much time would you save burning..... also for people that are burning ... do you really care about the time difference between the 12x and the supposed 20x-24x burner ??

I think it's all a hype with the faster burner...
heh maybe a conspiracy to take consumers moola ;)

I work at Circuit City and we just got this burner in stock today.

We also sell it for $299 (but thats not what I pay for it :D )

I believe it has "true" 24x recording. The side of the box reads "CLV" -- which is Constant Linear Velocity, meaning it records at 24x the whole burning process.

Some other drives (I think Yamaha) support "CAV" which is Constant Angular Velocity, those are the drives that write slow around the center of the disc and then speed up as it progresses.

Correct me if I am wrong.

How fast is the drive when not at full speed? 16x?

I have a 12/10/32 TDK (rebadged plextor), but I'm finding myself using 4x from time to time so that I can use the PC while it's burning... True, the PC's usable at 12x, but it also becomes as slow as molasses.

The 20x(yammie) and 24x(sanyo mech) cdrw on the market can not burn at full 20-24x...they burn at different speeds in different zones.
the 24x will burn 16x ...then go to 20x then in outer portion it will burn at 24x..each zone is 1/3 of disc so overall avg will be about 20x...

there is also no 24x media being released...

No actually they announced it like 3 weeks ago... some websites just aren't up on the news and like to post old stuff.

Right now there isn't much media that will even do 20x... let alone 24x. Even the junk PNY is selling rated at 20x and 24x doesn't work so hot.

The veloCD is a rebadged SAnyo BP1500P.. does the same Zone CLV that the Ricoh 20x does.

<< good gawd...24x? you could burn a whole CD in under a min....haha

Not really. You'd need around a 74x burner to do that, and even then, you'd still have to take into account the time to write the lead-in and lead-out areas.

Anything faster than 4x really isn't safe if you plan on keeping your CDs for more than a year or so. If you record at 24x your data will probably be really corrupted.

Oh well..

Actually, you can now buy Fujifilm 24X media at Staples, on sale - you can find this deal on another thread.

As proof, I have now laid out before me 500 of these beautiful Japanese Taiyo Yuden CDs, cheap to, at $14.88 a spindle of 50 80 min disks... and a $5 mail in rebate, and possible application of the $10 off #30 coupon (please don't PM me asking for this)...

NOTE: these CDs actually are the exact same discs as Fujifilm 16X media, but there is a new sticker on the package that say 1-24x. All I know is they are the best discs for my 12X Plextor

Do you have a link of some sort to corroborate this?

LOL, anything to back that up? I doubt it, it was probably something he overheard in the CompUSA or something. I have not seen anything in the 3 years that CDRWs have been over 4x that state this or even hint to this.
Thanks,

Yeah, have to disagree with the whole "4x or the disc blows" thing. I've had my Teac 58s for 2 years doing 8x burns non stop and everything reads fine.

Also - read in different posts about how cdr media self destructs or something in 6 months. This is also a load. I have kept cdr's burned at 8x with music in my car for over a year with no problems (scratches notwithstanding). I have stuff on my shelf that I burned 5 years ago and it's perfect, even on junk media.

That 4x junk is a myth.. as long as you have a decent drive and use media rated at the right speed it will work.

Is this ever gonna stop? or should I say there will be a 48X in another year or so. what's the theoretical limit on the speed anyway?? I think is time for me to upgrade from 8x to 24x soon.
