23andMe, got my genetic test results

I'm tempted by the $49 23andme kit. My mom was adopted and I've never known my father, so it would at least be interesting.

I thought so. I'm not really sure how often they run sales but I'm not too interested in *just* the ancestry results, so I've never pulled the trigger. $129 seemed reasonable enough

I don't find confirmation of my origins really worth money. My father is Hispanic/Mexican and my mother is Scottish with blond hair and blue eyes. I'd be more interested in finding out my dog's makeup. He was a rescue. Everyone always asks me what he is for the last 8 years.

I'll probably wait for another deal or for technology to advance, maybe around BF.

I'm interested in possible relatives, health and promethease but I'm also concerned about Google/Amazon having access to my DNA. So I'll probably purchase using a prepaid credit card, shipped to another address, using a different email account.

Yeah, I saw that the 23andMe kit dropped back to $100 (or $50 for the Ancestry). I'm curious about two things...

1. Is there any worth to doing both Ancestry DNA and 23andMe? It seems like the benefit is essentially about putting your genealogy information in more pools in case your long-lost relatives use one over the other.

2. Is the biggest difference between using Promethease and 23andMe's Health option just a nicer report? I took a look at Promethease's samples along with 23andMe's samples, and the prior's seem a bit more technical and harder to read (there's just a TON of information). The latter is essentially written in a simple way with basic information. I don't know if there's really any difference since I assume 23andMe's Health option uses the same research?

You're right. I went ahead and ordered one.

In your situation, if other relatives have taken the tests then you'll get matches, 1st cousin, 2nd, 3rd.... Might be good to know if you're sleeping with your half sister.
