i ordered a xp1700 w/ k7s5a thinking i had a 250 watt p/s, should i try to run it w/ the 230 watt? could i hurt it ? it's coming with a 60mm fan will that combo put too much strain on the ps. lmk, jer
I would not use a 230w for two reasons, there are no AMD recommended 230w PSUs on the AMD approved list,go here for AMD PSU approved list plus you just don`t know how long it will last if it does work, I`ve also read that the k7s5a likes a good 300w or 350w PSU in general.
it depends on the quality of the power supply, i have 3 systems , all tbird one epox 8kha+ and 1 abit kt7 and one 7as6, one has a 300, one a 250 and one a 235 and all have been working fine, so you could try it but dont be shocked -ha, if you have trouble, i just threw togeather what i had and got luckey the 250 is an enlight ps and the 235 is an aopen
in my system with the 250w, is abit kt7-r cd-r, cd rom, 1 hdd on the raid ctrl, scanner, rpinter , web cam, dazzel digital video creator, modem, nic, 3 case fans gef256, sunbeam taster oven
before you do anything with that k7s5a mobo...
realize that this mobo is design very differently.
it doesn't use the via chipset.
hence the way the mobo uses its voltage is very different.
so while epox 8kha+ with xp1700 might run fine with 250w,
k7s5a with duron 750 will not even boot with the same 250w.
there's another thing that you should keep in mind.
your cpu doesn't care what wattage is being supplied by your PSU on 12v...
not as much as 3.3v and 5v.
your peripherals are on 12v... ie cdrom, hd, floppy.
your mobo and cpu mainly run on 3.3 and 5v.
while cholly's computer has lots of peripherals running fine with his psu...
he doesn't have your picky mobo!
check your psu.
it should say what wattage is being supplied at those combined voltage.
my deer psu which is 300w total, and 160w in 3.3+5v isn't sufficient to run my k7s5a with duron 750 in it.
so there.
i doubt that your 230w has more than 160w on 3.3+5.
in which case your xp1700 will most definately not run fine.
it may boot if lucky, but it'll cause random shutdowns to protect your cpu.
