22WS or 24WS

I'm choosing a monitor for someone who wants the best. I'm thinking of recommending either the LG L226WTQBF or Dell 2407FPW. Which is the better choice? Is there something else out that's better than either. Don't want to wait for the new version of the Dell.

i think the dell has a better panel than the lg. but i seem to remember the 24in dells having some input lag in the past? maybe its been fixed with later revisions though.

edit: no gaming, but want overall best solution for the next 2-5 years.

Dell has a better panel, the 22inch is TN (6 bit color) while the Dell is P-MVA (8 bit color). The Dell is also 1920x1200 while the 22in is 1680x1050, so you have higher DPI (sharper) on the Dell. I am happy with mine.

LG is good for a 22" TN panel but that Dell (checked it out in person and have one on the way) is going to win out hands down - if you have the funds go with that 24"

If no gaming at all, then Dell would be perfect. The 1920x1200 screen is an amazing amount of real estate for running things side by side. Still, it would be better if I had an extra 200 or so horizontal pixels, but oh well🙂. The 1680x1050 is ok, but I doubt you can put two windows side by side comfortably. And finally, Dell=S-PVA > LG=TN with amazing viewing angles. Only problem is colour shifting which occurs for dark colours (move a bit left/right and colors lighten/darken). However, it's roughly the same as with TNs if you move up/down.

Do you mean the LG TN has amazing viewing angles?

The color shifting problem you refer to, is it for the Dell S-PVA or the LG TN or both?

And finally, does your last sentence mean that you see the same darkening/lightening with vertical movement on Dell S-PVA as on LG TN?

This last one is a bit worrying, as it is for me the major downside of TN panels. I would think that the Dell S-PVA should be much better in that respect. My parents have a 19-inch Dell 1907FPV with PVA panel, and it is much more solid and stable than my TN panel Dell 1907FP at work.

The viewing angles problem is for TN panels. The colour shift is supposedly for S-MVA/PVA whatever. I have a Dell 2407WFP and do not notice an issue with colour shift or for that matter input lag (I am a big gamer, FPS included). The only issue I had coming to it from a CRT was that when you make quick movements (180's etc) in FPS games, things get a bit 'blury' but after a month I got used to it and don't notice it anymore.

I too have a 2407WFP and see no issues of color shift. There's a slight lightening/darkening of the entire image if your vertical viewing angle is >40degrees. That viewing angle is rare to say the least. Side to side viewing angle changes nothing.

I game on mine and see no lag, and I also don't see a 'blur' issue. Perhaps it's the games I play or the way I play them. I have a trackball and can do a 180 about-face within the inter-frame timing (1/60th of a second). That's not exactly motion that could be blurred.

The 24" are better all-around. The major consideration is gaming which would require a beefier graphics card to drive the native resolution.

It doesn't sound like you'll be gaming, but the 24" have some nice tech-enabling features the 22" panels don't. You can essentially use your 24" panel as a high quality HDTV for a smaller room. Hook up your console, HD cable/satellite, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray and it all looks great at 1080.
