2253BW problem

So for the very first time in my life I have decided to go with an LCD. Hearing all the great things about them, I just had to get one for myself. After getting one, I was really impressed with the overall performance of this LCD. The games look even better on a widescreen display, images look crisp and I have a TON more screen real estate!!!

HOWEVER!!!! There is one severe issue that I really have with this LCD. And that's the 60hz plus 60FPS cap issue that is on most of my games. This really puts a downer on this LCD. I'm a huge UT2K4 player, I have always played this game on constant 90FPS for years. I have tried my best to play at 60fps but I just can't. My shots are totally off compared to when I was playing at 90fps. I practically miss every time now. Now I know what most of you are thinking. HOW CAN THIS GUY TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 60 AND 90FPS!!! Well, I guess it depends on the person but I definitely can see a difference between the two. And its putting a damper in my game playing.

Now is this pretty much it with LCDs? Am I stuck with 60fps forever? Or is there a fix somewhere that can be applied to display the full frame rate of my games? I'm pretty new to this LCD department so excuse my basic knowledge of it. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give!

I have to turn vsync on... basically without it the game seems like its running at a low frame rate DESPITE the frame count staying at a constant 90 FPS (which is the cap for online from what I know).

When I stand still the image looks great... but when I move around, especially turn really fast or look up and down fast, it has a very jerky... kinda stop and go feeling. Its very nauseating at the same time. Very hard to describe on how it moves but thats the best way I can describe it. It DEFINITELY looked a lot smoother on my really old CRT 19" Samsung 997DF. Again the game stays at a constant 90fps but it sure doesn't look like it. I posted this problem on widescreen gaming forum and they said its because my "screen can only DISPLAY 60FPS, meaning that when you feed it with 90FPS, 30 frames gets dropped every second." So I have to enable vsync to get rid of the jerky display. Anyone else have a solution?

I should of done more research before I bought this LCD. Not saying I didn't. But apparently not enough. I am very happy with the product but I'm definitely not happy with the speed of the product.

If you can really tell the difference between 60 and 90Hz, go to this website:

REACTION SPEED TEST

And set a new world record!

When you turn off VSYNC, the phenomenon you are experiencing is commonly called 'tearing'. When gaming on an LCD, you pretty much always have to have VSYNC and Triple Buffering on, or you will see that horrible tearing and get bad drops in fps (without Triple Buffering, you can only run at 60, 30, 20, etc fps).

ah, so looks like i'm stuck at 60fps for quite awhile... wow... i might have to go back to my crt then. :(

EDIT: lowest I ever got on that test was about 180ish ms. Not sure if thats good or not.. but according to rankings its pretty bad. Perhaps its a mental thing, maybe i can imagine myself playing at 90fps. lol

so after doing a little research to see if there's a fix i came upon an interesting post on HARDFORUM:

------------------------------------------
Quote from ToastyX from HardForum:

With gaming, every little bit matters because it can add up, and even if you're not that sensitive, you can use the added responsiveness to subtract lag from other areas, like if you wanted to enable vsync or use a wireless mouse.

Without vsync, there isn't much of a difference, but with vsync, there's a 1-2 frame delay because the next frame can't be drawn until the next refresh, and since monitors draw from top to bottom, the bottom of the screen will have more lag than the top. This means at 60 Hz, there's around 15-30 ms of lag, while at 85 Hz there's around 10-20 ms of lag.

However, this is not as much about responsiveness as it is about smoothness. The difference in smoothness between 60 Hz and 85 Hz is quite noticeable to me on an LCD. The difference is more noticeable to me than on a CRT because an LCD doesn't fade between refreshes, which makes it easier to distinguish individual frames. When I first saw an LCD running at 75 Hz without skipping frames, I was surprised at how smooth it was. I didn't realize it'd make that much of a difference. Now I'm annoyed that this potential isn't being realized because so many people believe it doesn't make a difference when it clearly does to me.

--------------------------------------------

Could this be the reason why my game playing is even worse now then before I had this LCD? It looks like I have to seriously think about switching back to my old crt. Unless there's a fix somewhere.

You aren't going to get 90fps on any LCD. Almost all of them are limited to 60hz, and that includes everything 20" and above. However, there are a handful of lower resolution 19" ones (1280x1024 and 1440x900) that do 75hz, which looks noticeably smoother than 60hz in many games and even in Windows. Not all 19" monitors will support it and some just skip every fifth frame when set to 75hz, but there are others that actually do it correctly.

Turning off vsync will give a higher framerate reading but the monitor will still be showing the same number of pixels per second.

Now I know what most of you are thinking. HOW CAN THIS GUY TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 60 AND 90FPS!!!

As far as I'm concerned, the question is more like "how can anyone not tell the difference." :p It all depends on what types of games you play though.

In Counter-Strike there is definitely a difference in how the game plays between 60 and 100 fps, so I can understand your pain. I think the only solution is that you will just have to practice some more so that your muscles learn the difference. It's possible the widescreen aspect is also throwing off your shots, or the different image is altering your view.
