i have no idea why the text issue would happen though

it sounds like it could be a backlight or driver issue or something, but i dunno :\
it shouldn't be normal. most black text should just be black with maybe some minor rounded fuzziness from interpolation
if you have the on-site repair warranty you can have dell send a support tech to your house to diagnose it

do you have binoculars (if you look through them backwards they can magnify close objects, heh) or a magnifying glass or hand lens?
or a camera with macro?
so that you can see what's going on with the pixels?

I get that problem on my 32" LCD TV with my HTPC hooked up to it. Even though the ATI drivers have overscan set to zero, and have the resolution set to native (1366x768), it has that problem. It's not "fuzzy", per se, but some text has blue and occasionally red edges.
