22 wireless networks around my apartment building.

I guess wireless has gotten pretty popular. There's only about 100 units in this building, and a 3 minute walk around the building showed 22 networks. I got curious after seeing 4 or 5 different networks from my apartment. Apparnetly 54mbps access points are still the minority, though. Only 2 of 22 are 54mbps.

Not many in my apt building. There is a business that has a wireless network close by though...

two of the 3 houses next to me have wireless b networks. yes its getting pretty common. which is why that super g stuff that stradles channels would suck if it got popular. people aren't good at only using 1/5/11 channels only either.(they don't overlap)

In most apartment complexes around here, you find unencrypted Linksys access points that have the default configuration. I probably could have gotten away with not paying for internet...

Have you started to leech their internet from them, or is it only wireless LAN's, and no internet connection? :p

Any conflicts? With that many so close, you'd think it would cause lots of interference.

Especially since I bet most are all on the same default channel.

There are no Wireless networks in the dorm (banned, and I searched) -- I feel lonely without the internet coursing through my body. Of course that could just be cold due to the lack of near microwave wi-fi frequencies.

It's a pity you can't bond multiple wireless connections together to create the Uber Internet or something.
I suppose with multiple machines you could micro-manage BitTorrent downloads and get absurd download times....

I have 5 in my apt, however my curiousness is less then my laziness, so I won't be walking around the building looking for other ones :)

Our company just sent out an e-mail instructing all users to remove wireless cards from their laptops when in a customer site . . . I guess one customer got a virus because their wireless network wasn't encrypted, and they somehow made the logical jump that it was the fault of our guy. Not sure if the virus came from our tech or not (if so, how would they tell? The router's log, or what? Seemed kinda fishy to me . . .)

Don't get me wrong, but if your IT department is too stupid to secure your wireless network, should you really be suing vendors for 500K?

It's amazing, about one out of every three wireless networks I find are unsecured. A lot of them are fairly big companies, too.

I found one near my home, must be the house next door or across the street, the funny thing is it has a wierd SSID, (looks like they set it themselves) but they still didnt encrypt the damn thing! :)
My Cisco 1200 b/g unit overpowers the puny Linksys/SMC/Netgear units i see around here, and I am all encrypted, etc....
