22" LCD & 1g 4670 or 512mb 4830

Hi Folks,

I originally started another thread trying to find a nice ~$100 card to replace my dying x800-128 and have settled on either the 4670 or 4830. I know the 4830 is faster/deeper/wider/etc. but the last question I had revolves around the 1g versus 512mb - which would be a better choice for driving an Acer AL2216WBD 22" LCD at 1680 x 1050 resolution for mostly non-gaming purposes? I am using this system currently for a lot of office work, some web dev/photoshop, some online gaming (mostly Ultima Online some WoW), and things like editing and watching video. The system is currently a 939/AMD 3000 with a monster 1g or RAM, plans to update to an e8400-based system with 4g sometime in the next month or two.

Any thoughts appreciated-

SAPPHIRE 100265L Radeon HD 4830 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
and
SAPPHIRE 100256L Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit GDDR3

For non gaming get what's cheaper. Also, 1GB on that HD4670 is overkill, find one with 512MB. It's like tanking V-Power 100 Racing gasoline and wearing a special suit for high speed motorbike driving and using a scooter that goes 30km/h tops downhills 😛

However, if you plan on doing some gaming other than WoW (which I would strongly advise 🙂), spend a few more bucks for the HD4830. Well worth it over the HD4670.

But be sure not to get a card with 1GB of memory in that performance bracket.

For your needs, that 4830 is the choice to make. Like Qbah said, 1gb of Vram on an 4670 is a total waste. It's just a marketing scam, that fools you to pay extra money for a card that has more ram then usual, but it performs exactly the same as the stock normal card.

1GB of VRAM is only useful on a high-end card like the 4850, 4870, GTX 260/280.🙂
