Bought this board cause I have an extra cel 433. Very cheap! Also I thought the ATI Rage 128's were faster than the intel740's. I think the ATI Rage is on par with the TNT1. Plus the Rage comes with hardware DVD decoding. This is a feature packed mobo for only 30 bucks!!!!

Intel i810's integrated video has DVD conpensation as well although I believe that ATI card does a lot better job doing it.

Only problem with this board is that you won't be able to use FC-PGA Celerons; hence, you won't be able to upgrade it in the future. Also, FC-PGA chips have become relatively more expensive compared to FC-PGA.

Still, if you want to build a cheap system, this board seems like a pretty good deal. If I had not gotten rid of all of my PPGA chips, I would have gotten one or two.

For comparative purposes, what is the cheapest integrated (i.e. decent quality video and audio on board) Duron mobo anybody knows about?

I maybe wrong, but there are no Socket A mobo's w/ integrated schtuff out yet... yet! I've read reviews, and they should be out soon... however, they maybe out know. (probably around $100... pure guess.) Check Pricewatch, if they are available to the public, they are there at the best price.

If all else fails, check into cheap Video Cards... This board is killer deal though... so damn tempting, even if it is -ugh- Intel... O'whale, it's for me mumsy anywho.

Here are all the current driver pages direct from Gateway. These drivers worked great with Windows 98 and ME.

http://www.gateway.com/support/techdocs/references/motherboard/4f4jz0xb/4f4jz0xb.shtml Here is the Gateway page for this mainboard.

http://www.gateway.com/support/product/drivers/sound/audiopci1373a.shtml The audio drivers are here. Be aware that this file is huge, 16MB, so if you are using a modem, download will take awhile. You might be able to get a smaller download at Creative Labs website.

http://www.gateway.com/support/product/drivers/video/6000711a.shtml Video is here. Also a big download, 8MB I think. For the 3D graphics to work correctly, you need at least DirectX 7.

http://members.aol.com/simmike/ This has a graphic showing pin-out of power, ide led, etc. There is information on the mainboard, but this graphic clarifies things.

Ordered one of these puppies yesterday. Thanks for not only the deal SimMike, but also for doing all of this other research and sharing your findings!

I second that. The details made me order this board, normally I feel left in the dark with such items.
Thanks!

The 440ZX chipset only supports a 66Mhz FSB. You can't overclock the CPU. The only thing limiting this board to 433Mhz, is the fact that they haven't released a BIOS update to support the FC-PGA CPUs. Otherwise, it would easily support up to 750Mhz Celeron.

Hey. Thanks and Kudos for the link. I am building a basic PC for a relative, and this board will be PERFECT.

The 440ZX chipset does support a 100Mhz bus. For example, Abit makes a board with the ZX chipset that supports 100Mhz. Just not on this Intel board. Just a 66Mhz for this board.

This might be a good deal, but beware of Overstock motherboards. A lot of them are refurbs... I love refurbs, but I recently bought two Intel Seattle Motherboards from Overstock thinking they were a good deal... When I got them, all the case connectors had been snipped... It took me forever just to find the correct pins to plug into to get the board to power on...once I got that far, the computer will not boot with video and I've tried 3 different video cards and various types of RAM... I may try to send them back, but I doubt overstock will accept them... Good luck on making sound decisions and building happy, working computers!

I ordered this motherboard from StarSurplus.com for $29.95 this afternoon. I later received an email stating that although their website showed a dozen in stock, they were in fact out of stock. It further stated that I should check back in three weeks.

Does anybody know where else to find them? I checked at overstock and they didn't have any.

My order was cancelled too. First I was happy to get a affordable board, didn't care if it is overclockable or not. But now this.
And their site ahowed many in stock.
Is this another egghead scam?

Scarpozzi -

Assuming you're still within the 30 day period, call Overstock's Customer Service at (801) 947-3100.

Tell them the problem, and they'll arrange for an RMA for you to return the boards, and pre-paid shipping labels to boot.

Good luck.

SimMike2 (or anybody)

Any feelings as to whether this board with a celery 433 has enough umph to serve as a dedicated home internet server. For fairly low traffic use. I don't mean as a network server. I use the Lynksys Cable Router/switch instead on a peer to peer. I mean as a DMZ server on a Linksys router system.

I'm thinking of building a pc for that and maybe also for voicemail. On all the time. I guess 128meg of ram. And some hard drive or another. Haven't worked that out yet.

Also, I take it that the 433 celery is the fasted @66 which Intel made for the socket 370. Is that right? There's no faster celery that can be plugged in? (I understand that the board doesn't support overclocking.)

There's a 533 PPGA - that's the fastest non FC-PGA. I would imagine that if you could get a 533 PPGA, it'd work fine at 533, since the board can't change CPU multipliers...just a guess though.

Too bad there's no BIOS update for the board, i would have loved to get one too.

Almost any board can be overclocked. Some require that you
have h-oda's FSB program, but all that does is reprogram the
clock chip that is on the board.

IF you hardwire the inputs to the clock, you can overclock
an intel board.

As for cases, has anyone seen a decent low-profile, almost
book-ish PC style case. I'm torn between getting one of
these, or a Asus P2B-N (up-to PIII-800 slot 1) with case/floppy/low-profile CDROM for $175 (NLX style mboard, Intel Pro 10/100 ethernet, ATI Rage Pro or IIc video, Yamaha sound)

Thanks for all the info...I got my board the other day. The cpu arrived today, however the board seems to be doa. I set it up, pretty simple actually, but don't get any video. No error beeps...I've tried removing memory and few other standard troubleshooting steps but think that this bad boy is toast. Too bad...it seemed to be a nice board...

Anyone know where I can find another inexpensive socket 370 board?
