21st Century dentistry is barely more advanced than leeches and bloodletting.

The one area of "medicine" that just never seems to advance is dentistry.

They still use drills to remove cavities, and painful injections of anesthetic that causes more pain than it prevents.

Just an observation as I sit here after having a tooth pulled and half my face looking like football.

Advanced Dentists don't use drills anymore. They use lasers.
Anesthetic injection shouldn't cause pain unless they are doing it wrong.

What tooth did you have pulled, and why?

There's only so much you can do with the items at hand. You have a rotten tooth, and it needs to come out. It can either be drilled/pulled, or they can use magic. I haven't seen magic successfully used yet, so...

Upper incisor underneath a fixed bridge. They had to cut thru the gum to get the root out without harming the bridge. "Idiopathic root absorbtion" which means they don't know the cause, but it happens a lot.

And anesthesia does hurt when it goes in. It's gotten better over the years, but its still not painless.

Did you previously have braces?

Did they use a topical anesthetic before the injection? Did the provider shake your cheek/lip during the injection? Did the assistant spray water on the site during the injection? These techniques rarely allow for you to feel the prick of the needle.

My front tooth hurts when I breathe in cold air. 🙁

I think I need to go and get drilled. God help me. Perhaps I should leave it until it turns brown like the British do?

Yes, I had braces.

No, that wasn't the cause of the problems. Once I got hit with a bat on a backswing that knocked my facemask off and fractured a tooth. Then a few years later I took an elbow to the same place playing basketball.

And I'm not touching the remark about pricks.

LOL, I hesitated when I typed prick. 😛

internal root resorption can be caused by trauma so you may have diagnosed the cause right there.

sometimes braces, if done too quickly, can cause root resorption too. that's why i mentioned it.

"Did you declare war on floss?"

Me - "Yes"

:awe:
use a flosser if you don't like conventional flossing or i see more cavities in your future...

I just got about 500 of these in the mail to give out to patients. If you lived closer I'd throw a bunch at you. 😛

I think dentistry is pretty good these days. My grandmothers both have a full set of teeth and they are well into their 80's. How long ago was it that being old meant you had only a few teeth?

Hell, the last time I went to the dentist was a pleasure. I had my cleaning and then an inspection and a tooth that I declined to have drilled out for a possible cavity last time was brought to my attention again this time. This time they could catch the probe in the niche so I understood what they wanted to do. I had the cavity drilled and filled in less than 10 minutes without any anesthetic.

I've had a quarter of my front tooth knocked out but the replacement bonding is indistinguishable from the real tooth. I've had braces that straightened out my teeth. You don't realize how straight most American's teeth are due to braces until you have spent time in countries where it is not as common. I've even had a tooth pulled but I never felt the doctor actually do the extraction.

I would say the opposite is true.

Modern dentists can fix anything. ANYTHING.

No matter what the problem is, with enough money, you can end up with a head full of nice teeth. Every tooth in your mouth could be rotten, but you can replace them all with implants.

Whereas the rest of the body is pretty hit a miss. So many things that cant be fixed.
