Like the title says, I'll be 21 in about a month; on June 14th to be exact. My older brother typically spends around $20-30 on birthdays, so I figure I could send a few drink suggestions for him to get me would be right around his budget.

1: No beer. I have Celiac Disease which means no wheat, malt or barley.
2: Not a big fan of wine, but I'll give it a shot if it's that good.
3: I got plenty of Captain Morgans.

Any ideas?

And in case anyone was wondering, the distillation process removes all gluten (Celiac Disease) from the liquor, so drinks such as Vodka (made from wheat) and Scotch whisky are OK for me to consume.

Probably some girly drinks like Kyle's killer lemonade, or maybe some Goldslick vodka w/ the little golden flakes.

Googling for information on Mike;s brings up this:

"Here is the reply I received from Mike's Hard Lemonade.

Thank you for taking the time to contact mike's hard lemonade. Mike's products available in the US are lemon clear malt based ( fermented barley beer malt) beverages. In independent lab analysis mike's products do not contain any traces of gluten protein, however, our products are bottled in multiple sites that produce other malt beverages. We cannot guarantee complete absence of gluten contamination from other products run on the same equipment.

Take care, and keep on enjoying the good things in life,
Sincerely,

Beats me how it could be a femented barly beer malt and not have gluten unless they distill it. Sounds too risky for me.

Terri"

So no dice. A bottle of vodka doesn't sound bad though...

Ask for something that ages well in a bottle, like a nice wine (I'd say a beer but you already said you can't drink that).

Then in 10 years or something you can open it up.

I personally have a bottle of Chimay (beer...) that I've been aging since I turned 21.

If you're looking for something to drink on your birthday, just get some whisky.

I would not trust these methods unless the manufacturer deems the product gluten-free.

IMO wine = win for celiacs.

Well it depends. I'd suggest "any liquor or wine" but you probably have different taste.

Vodka is good cause you can mix it with so many things: juice, pop, kool-aid, other liquor, etc. As far as wine goes, White Zin is pretty easy to drink and is my favorite. I'm probably the worst person to ask this question cause I'd say "uh, well, whatever has alcohol in it".

Wine is a good choice, if you're young and looking for something cheap, Franzia boxed wine gets a bad rap but is equivalent to $7 a bottle stuff and you get like 5 bottles worth for $10.

For learning I'd just get standard liquors, Bacardi, Smirnoff, Jack, etc., and see how you like them.

Crown.

Boy do I miss hard liquor. I was a huge crown drinker, but decided to give up hard liquor as of January 1st. Coincidentally, I haven't had soda since then either.

if looking for Vodka, could go with Ciroc and be positive you'll have no problems: it's a French grape-based vodka, made with Gaillac and Cognac grapes.
I'm not sure how grain-based vodkas work with people who have that problem. My brother in law has reactions with potato-based vodkas. Maybe potato-based vodkas would work well with you? Chopin is the of the most highly-noted potato vodkas, but carries a decent price tag: I think it's like $30 for a fifth (750ml).

Try some bourbon. Maker's mark should be around your budget, and is a decent bourbon. I recommend bourbon over scotch because it's sweeter, and more beginner friendly (IMO). If you like gin (most people don't at the start), you can get something like bombay sapphire. If you want to start with the rye whisky (which I prefer to bourbon), try some WL Weller, which is even cheaper.

But for god's sake try and drink better than the drivel most college students drink - like uber fruity drinks, or craptastic vodka. Drink less, but drink better.

And you can get gluten free beer, but apparantly it all tastes like ass, or so I've been told.

I've been getting Tuaca lately. It's a brandy with vanilla in it, not sure if a brandy is clear for Celiacs though.

Lemon-lime Gatorade and everclear, shaken, not stirred. Tastes the same going both ways.
