Are you trying to just edit files ? ? Or trying to use it as an XP system when that drive is connected ? ?
If the first, you just need to remove the boot info from the XP drive and just use it as a Data Drive. Otherwise, you will need to look into more boot control tools.
 
I don't understand your problem. My friends machine, has an IDE drive with XP on it, and I installed Win7 on a SATA drive (with the IDE drive disconnected), and then when I connected both drives, you have to go into the BIOS menu and select which drive to boot from.

With both drives connected, the boot menus of both drives never modified themselves to add the other OS. You must be doing something to cause this.

The XP drive is from my laptap and I ghost the drive occasionally to a another drive attached to my desktop (drive d).

I dont change the boot configuration in bios prior to, or after installing the laptop drive containing XP. Its an H61 1155 MSI board. So Im not sure why after Im done recoving the ghost image from Drive "D :" on the desktop and reboot with the drive disonnected, WIN 7 now shows a dual boot menu. That menu will not go away until I use Bcdedit to remove the boot drive manually. Otherwise it would never go away despite only being able to access win7 @ boot time. 😡
