Is there an ideal resolution for viewing 4:3 material on a 1680 x 1050 widescreen monitor (viewing it in the monitor's 4:3 mode)? I remember reading about a 4:3 resolutuon that "matched" the native resolution of a widescreen monitor.

Any information about scaling on this monitor in general is appreciated.

Well, there is no "4:3 version" of 1680x1050 if that's what you mean. There is one that allows you to have only one set of black bars on one side.

1680x1050: native 16:10
1400x1050 (140-pixel-wide black bars on left and right): aspect ratio scaled 4:3
