2142 alternatives

I've been stuck in BF2 since inception and there's no way I'm going to adopt 2142, it's terrible. What are my alternatives? I don't like WOW type games.

When is Team Fortress 2 coming out?

Not till next year, but supposedly early next year. As of now probably nothing except the same stuff you've heard about: CSS, Day of Defeat, UT2004 is still popular, etc

Yep.. for now for FPS games I'm sticking with BF2 and older games like Source/HL2, UT2004, Joint Ops, etc. Tribes 1/2 are still awesome games and there's a couple hundred players for them usually.

I probably won't be getting into any new FPS games until ET:QW and HL2: EP2 which is suppose to come with Portal and TF2. Of course some good mods come out from time to time for the above games so I might check out some of those.

You can keep playing BF2. From what I hear, it's practically the same game with some minor new features.

I would say keep playing BF2... I heard there was a new mod coming out similar to DC for 1942.

I heard early '07 for Quake Wars... probably around the time others will come out.

I believe Team Fortress 2 comes out before this Christmas. It will be releasing with Half Life: Episode 2 simultaneously on PC, PS3, and XBOX 360.
TF2, Half Life 2 ep 2, and portal will all be packaged together for the PC. For the consoles, all of the half life 2 series will be packaged together.
I get the impression BF 2142 is trying to take some of the thunder out of Valve's fun spin on team combat games.

Armed Assault should prove to be a game with substance. The game will offer much more flexibility with regard to game play and modifications than any EA product. Unfortunately, there still is no publisher for the North American market. Armed Assault is being developed by the same people who created Operation Flashpoint.

You can find out more about the game here:

The usuals: TF2 (pretty soon now), quake wars, UT (getting a bit old).

Can I make a somewhat unconventional suggestion?

Get Tribes Vengeance.

If you think you are "the man" when it comes to multiplayer 3d shooters then check this out. There is *nothing* else out there that will provide the same challenge to your shooter and tactical skills.

Is there anyone else who has played Tribes long enough to get good who wants to dispute this or give an 'amen'?

Everytime I try to play BF2 I become disgusted with a stupid ranking/point whoring system and quit. BF1942 with mods is still my choice.

I love the stats. It gives me something to work towards and a sense of acheivement.

Unlike games like counter-strike and 1942, I can track my progress, know if the things I've been doing are working better or not, and have something to do when my clanmates aren't playing.

Sure it's all just "pretty shiney things" in the end, but by the time you get your veteran badges, you really feel like you've learned that much more about the kits and vehicles.

So what if other people are just fluffing their numbers, do you really give a crap what kind of numbers they have?

I'll say "amen," but with a footnote. I played the hell out of Tribes: Vengeance. As a matter of fact, I was in the final talks about joining up with a squad for a couple of leagues.

I dropped it like a bad habit though when the developer dropped support for the game. Something about that just got to me, and I haven't played since.

Of course, you can pretty much find T:V in the used bargin bin for like $5 now. I think it would be worth the $5.
