So I've decided its time for an upgrade and I'm fairly certain I've got all my parts picked out. I was thinking of going with the eVGA 7950gx2. My most played game is World of Warcraft but I'd like to have the option of playing other more recent games at maximum detail settings. I have a 21inch widescreen LCD so I game at 1680x1050, so that leads me to believe that this card wouldn't be overkill...I'd just like some opinions before I plunk down 550+ for a new video card. Thanks in advance.

Nothing is ever overkill! If you had a 13" crt that had a max resolution of 800x600, I'd still suggest that 7950gx2 or a x1900xtx crossfire setup.

Anyway, that 7950gx2 might be overkill for WOW and most games out now in that resolution, but who knows what future games might demand.

I think you'll be fine with a single highend card like the x1900xt or 7800gtx. Save some cash and upgrade later as you see fit.

DO IT!

With it you will be able to run max AA/AF and not worry about it playing smoothly.

You should be set for future titles as well.

Fess up sisq0kidd, you probably reccomend a PhysX card too. Send that burning cash to me and I promise to email you everyday and tell you how bright, smart and good looking you are for not paying a premium for unused capacity.

I play WoW at 1680x1050 with a 6800nu (unlocked). It runs great. Save your money and get a 7900GT for $230. If you still feel that's not enough drop another one in.

That's a pretty cheap price for you e-mailing me everyday ;) $500 divided by the rest of your life = pennies a day.

My 7900GT's in SLI (700/1620) can't even play CS:S at 1680x1050 with those settings.

Get a single 7900GT or if you want to spend a little more, a single X1900XT

CS makers must hate nvidia lol. they make it so hard for nvidia card owners to play. my x1900xt @ 1680x1050 at max settings still gets 120+ fps, never seen below 100fps even with smoke, 10 players on the screen all and shooting

"...was thinking of getting a 7950...?"

Great thinking and go get it is what I'd do.

A single HIS ICEQ x1900xt is the best buy @ the moment. The 7950GX2 is cool but there's a real possibility that it may not be compatible with your mobo. I'd do some research first.

You don't need a SLI mobo for the Geforce 7950GX2.

That's not my point. I mean you need to make sure your Bios accepts the card. Look around and you'll see what I mean.

Performance wise I dont think a 7950 GX2 is overkill. Even if its more than enough for WoW the OP admitted he may want to play even more current/new games so in that respect its a good way to future proof for a while. Now is it worth the $500+? thats something only the OP and his wallet (or his wife if he has one) can decide. Its his money afterall. If he was asking to do 7950 Quad-SLI at 1600x1200 or less res then I'd say its probably overkill after the most recent Quad-SLI article I read. Which the link can be found on the first page of this forum.
