Check out this incredible deal at Overstock.com You actually have to put this Nokia 445Xi 21-inch Color Monitor into the search box. It won't let me pull the link for it. Sorry. But this is an incredible deal on a 21 inch monitor. As if this deal isn't enough, FREE SHIPPING!!! Check it out and let me know what you think.

Not bad, especially considering the free shipping. I usually try to keep my monitor purchases under $200 for a 17" and under $300 for a 19" this price of $379 for a brand name 21" is not too bad at all.

My friend has this monitor. It has great reception and excellent picture quality. Age of Empires is damn cool at 21 inches.

reviews for u:

http://www.zdnet.com/products/content/pcmg/1612/pcmg0154.html

http://www.zdnet.com/products/content/cshp/1702/cshp0198.html (yes this is different than the one above.....

http://www.maven.com/Maven/Monitors/Summary/07259702.htm

Biggest drawback I see on this monitor is that the reviews I found with a quick search are all dated 3-4 years ago.....personally, I think even the best monitors lose image quality and reliablilty after a few years.

Personally, I wouldn't buy this. Maybe...maybe if it were $200 and I could "try before I buy".....

:)

EDIT: Reply to "laugh"
That "review" is pretty weak. The guy was sooo upset about "how big" it was....DUH!! it's a 21" monitor!!! He critisized the dot pitch....that's true of most monitors...not just Nokia. I think this guy was PMS'ing (apologies to the ladies)....he was having a major b*tch fest. Just my opinion.....

I urge you NOT to try it. I did. I had a Viewsonic PS790. Other readers are right. These refurbs are 3-4 years old. Ancient by monitor standardss and few of them were used by little old ladies, rather 15 hours a day by business people. I have seen 4 of these refurbs and those that have them love them. BUT, they're people who upgraded from a 14" and use the 21" at 1280x1024. The dot pitch is freakin huge compared to my PS790 and I sold mine right away. Very poor compromise.

Don't confuse this with the Nokia 21" 445Xpro. Higher quality electronics in the 445Xpro. I have one and the screen looks like a photo.

This is the same refurbished monitor that was at Buy.com awhile back for less and with free shipping, Buy.com was initially listing it as a Viewsonic (because Viewsonic bought out Nokia, although long after these were manufactured). I got one and the screen was covered with scratches that appeared black on a ;ighjt background. Then it died completely within the 1st 48 hours. They got it back. It and all the others that were returned were probably reboxed and sold to Overstock.com. ;-)

I just got an IBM P260 21" with Trinitron FD tube at Ubid for $459 + $93 for shipping. I know it's an auction place, but they have quite a few of these. These go for $1070 at buy.com. I think it's a hot deal for a 21" with FD tubes. If you are looking for a 21", check it out. It's brand new with 3 year warranty through IBM, so no worries there.

Ubid isn't that bad. Like always, you to watch what you're buying. I bought a refurb 21" Hitachi Superscan Elite about a year ago from them for ~$370. The monitor had a few case scratches but the picture tube looked great (and still does). You can still get some bargains from them (even with the high shipping cost they have now), you just need to be careful and read the fine print on shipping, warrentys, etc.

It took a while to convince myself to do it, but I bought my Sony CPD-G500 21" :D via Ubid and it was pretty painless. It was listed as a refurb, but it's impossible to tell that it's not brand new (it even had the new electronics smell). The only issue I had was that it took about 3 weeks via ground shipping, which cost me about $80 for the 75lb behemoth.
Total cost ~600 for a $1200 monitor is a good deal in my book, even if it has a refurb sticker on the back ;)
As with anything, you gotta be careful buying from auctions, but I think Ubid is just as "safe" as something like overstock.com since it's the same type of merchandise anyway.

So how does this discontinued Hitachi compare to a Sony G500? The refurb G500 is tempting...

Thanks for pointing out the sweet deal on the Hitachi.

EDIT: well the G500 can do 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz, Hitachi is 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz. How many of you run at 1600x1200 on a 21"? How about higher than that? I'm running a 19" at 1280x1024 @ 85 Hz and I can't imagine going any lower... I couldn't imagine less than 1600x1200 on a 21"...

Ubid shipped my IBM P260 out the next day, expecting it tomorrow. I think it has the same tube as the Sony G500. It can do 1600x1280 @ 85Hz. For less than the price of the Sony G500 and brand new rather than refurb, why go for the G500? 3 yrs warranty through IBM. Doesn't refurb Sony's only have 90 days through Sony?

Picked up a E500 from Ubid a week ago. Arrived in 4 days, key is to use FedEX Ground instead of UPS, UPS really do love destroying those monitors. Mine was manufactured in Sept 2000 and is in perfect shape. To answer your question I am running 1600x1200x32@85, can't imagine dropping back to 1280x1024x32 on this. I think the only difference between the E500 and the G500 is a slightly higher top end resolution (which many won't run anyway) and the added BNC input as well as a couple of extra OSD functions. Both do 16x12 @ 85, worth the high shipping via Ubid IMO.
