21" monitor users, what resolution?

hey, i use 1600 x 1024. I think that any res that you use, at some point your eyes become adjusted and then things seem to become larger. I think though that 1600 x 1024 is a good use of the space and it doesnt seem to be large to me and i have had it for months. hope i helped

I have a Nokia 445Pro, I think it seems larger because ive been spending a lot of time in front of my server monitor which is a 17" @1024x768

that res is going to smash everything vertically, unless you have black bars at the top and bottom, in which case it's pointless.

the nokia 21 inchers at the place i used to work were 1600x1200

Nokia 445pro here. I run everything at 1600 x 1200 x 32 @ 120hz refresh. It may seem tiny at first, but I got used to it after a day or so. Now any rez smaller than that looks HUGE to me 😉

For text such as web surfing, I use 1280x960 on my 21" and 1600x1024 on my 24" widescreen Sony. I'm 35 and my eyes started going to crap a couple years ago. I used to be able to use higher resolutions. Now those give me a headache.

For gaming I go as high as I can, within the limits of the game, hardware and monitors.

That is an awesome refresh rate. I checked for that monitor on Pricewatch to confirm what you said. I noticed is costs $800+. That's steep. Sounds like an awesome monitor. =)

1600x1200 or 1280x1024 look the best to me on a 21", at least have 85Hz refresh rates on both res.

I too have a Nokia 445 Pro. Unlike most of these guys, though, I typically run at 1280x1024@85. It will go higher, of course, but I typically don't need it to. And it didn't cost me $800+. I got it for $348 including S&H off e-bay. Look around, and you'll get a good deal.

I would recommend you run at the manufacturers recommend resolution and refresh rate. Typically if you run the monitor at the manufacturers recommended resolution it should not need hand tuning, because this often is the resolution they use to align the monitor at the factory.

The key specification to tell what the monitors optimum resolution is the horizontal scan frequency.

For example:

A monitor with a 70 - 85Khz HSF is optimized for 1024 x 768 at 85Hz
A monitor with a 92-97Khz HSF is optimized for 1280 x 1024 at 85Hz
A monitor with a 107 - 110Khz HSF is optimized for 1600 x 1200 at 85Hz
A monitor with a 121Khz HSF is optimized for 1900 x 1200

Also there is a direct correlation between HSF and price. As the HSF goes up, the resolution capability goes up and so does the price.

I have a Sony CPD-G500 (21" .24dp - 2048x1536 max res).. I run it at 1024x768 - 32-bit color - 120Hz refresh rate.. Even at 2048x1536 it's quite readable, but I just prefer 1024x768.. 🙂

I did a poll here earlier. If I remember right the vast majority were either 1600x1200 or 1280x1024. A few people were smaller and a few people were larger. I personally think 1600x1200 is perfect once you spend a few days there (to get used to the font size). There is plenty of space on the screen and the letters are still readable from a good distance.

I've got a Sony E500 21". The factory recommended setting for this monitor is 1280x1024 w/ 85Hz refresh. That's where I run it. I've tried it at 1600x1200. It's just to small for me. 1280x1024 on a 21" is kinda like 1024x768 on a 17".
