21" Monitor Questions

Well, yes I'm sure for RTS and slow paced games larger monitors couldn't hurt.

1st Question
I mean for games like Quake 2, CounterStrike, quick games where you must see the whole screen easily...any possibility of a monitor being too big for games?

2nd Question
What inexpensive 21" monitors are there? $600-800 price range. I've been looking into Dell Trinitron P1110 (anyone have that?) and Sony's CPD E500. Wondering if they can maintain high refresh rates, at least at 1024 resolution (that's what I run my 17" dell trinitron at now, 100HZ).

Any Opinions?

I doubt you will ever have a monitor too big for gaming. If it *is*, go ahead and send it to me, 'll Icover shipping and i'll send you my 17" and an old 15" too :)

The dell 20% deal is still going on, free shipping isn't.

Is the 21" P1110 DELL good?

The Dell P1110 would be my pick if the 20% off still exist.

I'm having trouble deciding between that Sony G520 Trinitron and the Dell P1110 Trinitron. The thing is I thought they are both Trinitrons and should deliver about the same performance (I won't be running anything but 1024 and MAYBE 1280 resolution), so I just wanted 90-100 HZ. The Dell is still 20% off...anyone know anything about the Sonoy G520?

Thanks,

It would be a shame to have a 21" monitor at 1024x768 resolution. I just tried it and it really hurt my eyes, the text and icons are far too large for my tastes. If you have poor vision, I might see it as a good option. I keep my 21" monitor at 1600x1200.

The main thing to think about is how close you sit to the screen. If your face is closer than 20" from the screen, you will not like the 21" monitor (You get dizzy trying to see all 4 corners at the same time). In fact, I really like to be at least 2 feet from my monitor.

I haven't tried both of your monitor choices so I couldn't tell you which is better. If you want lots of bright vibrant colors, a trinitron is the best around. If you want clear sharp text without those horizontal bands, I'd look at different models (a Cornerstone p1500 is one example in your price range)

Well my dad is getting a P1110 with his new DELL he purchased (he wouldn't let me build it), so I can see how it is there, just hope the 20% off Dell doesn't leave by then. My dad runs his 19" at 1024 and I don't see a problem with it, I don't see how it could hurt your eyes at 21" unless it's inveritably much larger. 1600 hurts my eyes on windows, I've seen many 21" users use it to increase desktop space, but things get way too small for me, especially if the thing was 2 feet away from me..my current 17" I'm about max 12 inches away from..maybe that's how I have bad eyesight (but even with my glasses/contacts on...1600 seems too small). I doubt I'll be bale to sit 2 feet away from a monitor...for games I'm up even closer, I've heard of people sitting far back for games - maybe you have to with a 21". The farther back I am for games iwth my 17" I play much worse, maybe I don't feel immersed enough heh....browsing around and programming in windows i can sit far away as long as I can read the text I'm typing...

Well, you better check, 'cause I think the 20% off already ended.

I just put my head 12" from my monitor, and I couldn't read the text in all the corners at the same time. So if you keep playing like that, you might not like a 21" monitor.

I've seen 21" monitors before, sitting 12" from them I can use the PC fine. I can sit as far away as I want, just don't see many people sitting 2 to 3 feet behind their monitor...if I have to I can sit much farther back, if you use a 17" monitor you wont be able to read text well on small fonts at 1600 sitting 2 feet away.

That 20% off was for everything in dell's accessory store, and now it's only for the P991 and P1110 Dell Monitors in the store, so it's still active....

Let me just say I love my 21" Sun OEM monitor(its really a Sony GDM-500). I play alot of CS and DOD and I really like the large screen. I must be some sort of weirdo though because i use it at 1024x768 at like 100hz refresh. I mainly do that because its habit and i dont know if my old card can support such a high refresh much higher. Definatly go for a 21" if you can. Try checking out ubid also, they usually have some neat stuff.

Who needs a bigger monitor? just compensate by getting closer or farther.

Even though that is partly a joke I made up, it's damn true.

Realisticly, a 19" should be just fine. If I got a 21Inch I would have to move farthe away from my desk which is basicly compensating by getting farther from it..... oh well to each their own!

MallowJr - Are you absolutely certain the 20% off Dell-branded products is still valid? I went to Dell4Me.com clicked accessories and see no mention of the 20% off. There's now a 10% off which is available on all products (Sony, Samsung, Dell, etc.) with free shipping for orders over $100. It's not 20% off but 10% off with free shipping is still a good deal.

Before you consider getting a 21" monitor check out this thread.

Yes, I was absolutely certain at the time I posted the thread. It has now died and transformed to 10% off their entire accessories store, it was originally only 20% on upgrades on certain items (only 2 specific dell monitors, P991 and P1110) - and it was there when I posted because I had checked on it...now it has changed but mind still hasn't. Going to read that 21" monitor thread first.
