In the market for a new CRT to replace my 10-year-old 17". Yes, it has to be a CRT. I greatly prefer shadow-mask to Trinitron. Price is not really important, as long as it's not absurd.

As far as I can tell there are only two choices for a 21" shadow mask CRT - the NEC Accusync 120 and the Viewsonic G225F. I'm hoping there's someone out there who has one of these (or some other 21" CRT I have overlooked) that can give me pointers.

The Viewsonic looks a little better on paper, with better dot-pitch, dual inputs (one of them BNC), and higher refresh rates/maximum resolution. I have, however, always been partial to NEC (that's what my current monitor is, and it's been great, but it's starting to show signs of age).

My most important criteria are focus, geometry, convergence, glare, and color accuracy, in that order.

Come on, surely there's someone in the world that still uses CRTs 🙂

new large size crts are hard to find, but a real pro one you probably can stillget if you look.

the only really common sizes now are 15 and 17" because there is still high demand from developing nations.

Do you guys think this is a good buy?

Thats the monitor I've been using for the past 2 years, and i am totally in love with it, it also usually gets really really good reviews, excellent monitor w/ no regrets! I would highly recommend it. 1600*1200 @ 85hz = hawt.

What about using its 2048x1536@106.3Hz?

I think that's the maximum refresh rate at the recommended resolution, whatever that is. The 130khz horizontal scan rate should give 75hz or something around that at 2048x1536.

Correct, it's 75hz @ 2048*1536

Cool, thanks guys. I think I will get it, just to use dual monitors and also to see what gaming with a good CRT is like. Kudos.

The problem with widescreen; If you're playing a game with a status bar at the bottom/top, the "wideness" becomes too wide and you can't see anything up and down. It's like looking through a slit-hole.

I much prefer 4:3 monitors for gaming and all... with that said I'd love to re-buy a G500 if no comparable flat screen technology comes along soon.
