Something about refurb hard drives scream... run.

However with Jasper showing up I'm thinking about finally getting a 360. The current deal at Target for a Arcade + the refurb drive would be a good deal. Are the drives beat up (scratched up, etc...)? Or do they look new? Also for those that have gotten them how reliable is a refurb drive?

They seem to be working ok for me. :)

You could just get a Pro on ebay w/ Cash back for $210.

Mine looks "new." It works, there not much else to report on.

People have this stigma with refurbished stuff as damaged goods. Get over it, they have the same warranty and go through the same testing as new stuff, they are just cheap.

I don't know about the Xbox hard drive, but refurbished products usually don't have the same warranty as new products.

I believe "refurbished" products are most often just retail returns, not items that broke and were fixed. If a 20 GB hard drive dies, they're not going to fix it. I wouldn't expect the refurb hard drives to die prematurely. Of course we really can't give you any useful information. Anecdotal reports are useless, especially since Microsoft has only been selling these refurb drives for a couple of months. None of us has any statistics on failure rates for these drives, so anything we say is conjecture.

I may buy a refurb drive, but in my experience with a home PC and hard drives, the things are crap and often die within a couple of years anyway. I may still do the refurb, but for $30 does it really matter terribly if it dies anyway? Maybe safe essential game saves to the internal memory and not the drive, but otherwise, it wouldn't matter massively.

The next Xbox will almost certainly have on-board flash storage supplemented by a hard drive. The Wii has already proven that a small amount of flash will go a _long_ way and that hard drives are overkill for a lot of folks. For a hat trick, I'll also predict the ability to do online backups of save games, maybe to the tune of 128mb per account - log in to Live at a friend's place and load your saved games from the Internet. Pretty slick. You want a third prediction, you say? SD card reader instead of memory cards.

just got the circuit city refurb 20GB hd and wireless controller. controller is literally brand new (original sticker is on it, no scratches or marks anywhere), and the hdd is in pretty good shape. there are very slight marks around the chrome metal part, but otherwise it looks brand new. for $40, you cant go wrong.

this bundled with the 360 arcade is a great deal. saved $60, as i have an hdmi cable and got a headset for free from my friend. perfect.

definitely happy that i went with refurb this time. basically spent $10 more instead of going microsofts route and got a free wireless controller! :)
