2026 FIFA World Cup (US, Canada, Mexico)

Sorry, but this is venturing into hysteria.

1) How could attendance be atrocious? There is unbelievable demand, and tickets are already min $1200 each at games in SoCal. We saw this at the World Series games in LA. Completely sold-out games, people paying hundreds to thousands or even tens of thousands per ticket. Why would the World Cup be any different?

2) There were people in attendance at the World Series cheering for nations other than the US. I know Canadians who travelled to LA for games and cheered for the non-US team. Why would a US citizen or anyone else here legally be afraid to cheer for a Canadian or Mexican or any other team? This makes no sense.

There are now 3 things currently going against it in the US.
1) Highest ticket prices - last I saw the prices of games in the US was far higher than those in MX/CAN
2) Sketchy (at best) international travel into the US for a large portion of the world's soccer fans - kind of self explanatory. Basically anyone that looks brown is gonna be having 2nd thoughts
3) Now a possible shifting of any US based game location - yeah, lots of people will be really thrilled about having to adjust entire travel itineraries based on the whims of a madman

This isn't rocket surgery ...

This is happening right now and you are choosing to ignore it.
I'm not ignoring it. I'm aware of it and I hate it. I don't think that people who are at risk of deportation are the ones who were going to pay $1200 per ticket in the first place. It was more of an observation that this didn't prevent people from attending other major sporting events and it likely won't this time either. We'll see. Maybe my opinion ages like milk.

You're right, it isn't rocket surgery. It's economics. The prices are high because the demand is high, and the math nerds that work for the ticket sales think these are the prices that people will pay. I watch people pay exorbitant prices for World Series tickets, for NFL tickets, lots of stuff.

It just seems misplaced to try to make this about deportation politics when there are other legit things that are actually about that. It does seem hysterical to me to claim that cheering for a brown colored team might get you deported. But yeah if game locations get changed or if protests block people from attending then sure.

I hope for a good World Cup despite our current troubles.

The only #s I've seen in regards to demand is that only about a million out of the ~7.1M available. And, that they were going to start "dynamic pricing" to attract more buyers.
Also, this is a direct quote from a recent ESPN article on ticket sales:
The start of ticket sales doesn't take away from how there are unique questions for consumers heading into the tournament, particularly about how they'll get visas, if necessary, to visit the U.S. as the country cracks down on immigration. An international friendly match between defending World Cup champion Argentina -- featuring Lionel Messi -- and Puerto Rico was moved from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, because of lagging ticket sales that some believe were in response to the immigration crackdown.

I predict the ICE presence at every match involving South and Central American teams will be so abundant fans will have trouble getting into the stadiums.
Worse. Would end affecting all the non Trump friendly countries, and yeah, that includes asians too.

Canadians cheering for their MLB team is quite different.

But a US citizen attending a stadium dressed in national colors of Iran, Colombia, Ghana, maybe Mexico (if playing US) etc and on the "wrong end" of Peter Griffin's skin color chart, well, they should give it a thought or two. I m not saying they'd be immediately deported, but there's a real risk of drawing unwanted attention from ICE. And I don't put much stock in the deportation process being fair.

So non white people are too poor to attend games. Got it. You are ignoring the government violating the US Constitution.

If I were named Jose Martinez (i.e. a common latino name) I would be hesitant to come to the USA for anything during this administration, period, full stop.

Looking forward to the WC. 😛

The man leading the White House Fifa World Cup 2026 Task Force made it clear on Wednesday that the Trump administration cannot guarantee non-US citizens will be safe from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids at stadiums...

Federal coordination for the World Cup has been assigned to Andrew Giuliani, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, and the son of Trump's former lawyer and New York City mayor, Rudy Giuliani.

Aren't you Trumpers embarrassed yet?
So FIFA makes up a fake award for him in exchange for him attempting to convince his sheep that we should rename football. Hilarious. If a Democrat suggested we rename football, the cries of wokeism would be so loud and prevalent that it would raise the dead.

Well.. seems that the steal is clear... looking at the groups, they gave Argentina and USA the easiest venues. But still, USA at least will steal like nothing.

While I did not watch the ceremony so I don’t know what was said

But I hope the media corners FIFA on what accomplishments did trump do to earn this trophy. And have that media person be smart and be critical of the answers

That's a "participation trophy" if I've ever seen one.

I agree, although I think you're being way too generous describing it that way. Viewed in a different light, I see where Trump actually deserves that trophy being that they're both cheap fakes, representing fake ideals, given in a fake ceremony from one fake to another.
