Reliability and safety are primary criteria for me for selecting a vehicle.
Ease of owner maintenance is also a plus - I performed all the service on my current vehicle (almost 9 years old now).
I'd rather not spend more than 30K on a vehicle.
Assume gas mileage does not matter to me. I drive few miles per year.
Assume that I can get the base trim Camry for around $20K and the base CR-V for around $24K.

Which would you buy, and why?

Why cross shop 2 different body styles? If you don't need the space get the car.

Between the two, Camry, because I dislike SUVs.

Between the Camry and the Accord, I'd get an Altima, since IMO they're just as good but they're usually a bit cheaper.

I'd also get a pre-leased because being the first guy to fart in a car seat isn't worth $10k to me.

I would compare Accord vs Camry or Rav4 vs CRV.

Camry has a bigger fuel tank and gets better MPG ... less stops for gas
Camry has longer wheelbase so should ride smoother.

CRV is shorter by almost a foot so it will be easier to park in the city.

I'd take a Camry over a Rav4 .. but honestly, why not just keep your current vehicle another few more years?

Tough decision. If you don't need the extra ride height and space, is go with a Camry to save the money. But I'd wait for the new 2018 model year.

Any particular upgrades with the 2018 model year that would make it worth waiting for?

I can get a 2017 Camry SE for a little over $21K OTD.

It's completely new. The revised engine and 8 speed auto alone do it for me, and the interior looks nicer. All details aren't out yet, but if you don't care about any of the things that have already been announced then a 2017 is okay too. If you plan to keep this for the log haul then I'd at least do a little reading on it to see if anything on the upcoming model may interest you.

It is hard to compare a car to a SUV. Both are good vehicles no question about that.
Between Camry and CR-V, I would go Camry V6.

Secondary option would be Accord and possibly Civic.

It really depends on how you drive.

Camry has a bit more shoulder room .
CR-V is turbo nowadays and has the edge on power.

Technically the CR-V beats the Camry in the stat war.
Camry's on the other hand can be had for less and wins the cockroach war. Easy to maintain. Cheap to maintain. Kinda car you keep until the ODO shows 400K and realize that you hardly put any money into it. Should be decent deals on Camry's out there.
I don't see Honda budging too much on CR-V's.

If you just need an A to B car that will last you forever, why spend more on CR-V?
If you need the cargo capacity and flexibility of the CR-V , why is a Camry on your radar?

For a long haul perspective, Camry will probably be the cheaper route with less hassle.
CRV with its turbo\direct injection engine, while ticking off all the right marks cost more and may require a bit more $$$ to keep going over the life of the vehicle.

If I were buying one of these two today I'd get the CR-V.

The current Camry is a bit long in the tooth, but next year's model looks pretty legit. Better suspension, engine, transmission, and the full safety suite is going to be standard across the line. Should start hitting dealers later in the summer.

Odd poll comparing sedan and CUV. I'd pick none of the above. Lately I've been a fan of Mazda design, both interior and exterior wise. They're also really nice to drive and the 6 speed automatic is really really good. CX-5 if you need more space/ground clearance/AWD, Mazda 3 hatchback if you don't.
